City of Chemnitz considers new foundation of the "AfD Chemnitz Council Group" to be invalid

The City of Chemnitz considers the re-establishment of an "AfD Chemnitz City Council Group" by twelve former members of the Chemnitz AfD City Council Group on 1 August 2025 to be invalid following a detailed examination involving the Saxony State Directorate.

The city councillors who had previously resigned no longer belong to a parliamentary group due to their resignation. As non-attached members of the City Council, they are not entitled to group funding.

In the view of the City of Chemnitz, the resignation of the twelve parliamentary group members and the re-establishment of the AfD parliamentary group were not based on any substantive or political differences, but solely on personal differences. The city assumes that the resignation and re-establishment were carried out with the aim of circumventing court rulings on the exclusion of a group member and avoiding a legal dispute that could last for years.

Overall, it can be assumed that the newly founded "AfD Chemnitz City Council Group" with twelve members and the existing AfD City Council Group with three members are clearly politically homogeneous in their objectives. The City of Chemnitz is therefore convinced that this is not a permissible factional split.
