A journey to the treasures of operetta and its creators

On 5 April 1874, "Die Fledermaus", the operetta par excellence, was premiered in Vienna. Exactly 150 years later to the day, Chemnitz Opera Director Jürgen Reitzler takes a look at the operetta genre, which includes classics, newly discovered treasures and current premières for an increasingly diverse (target) audience. Supplemented by musical contributions, he will shed light on the diversity of the genre and the people behind it with historical highlights and anecdotes.
The event is being organised in cooperation with Chemnitz Opera House.

"Not without my kippa. My everyday life in Germany between clichés and anti-Semitism", reading and discussion with Levi Israel Ufferfilge

Levi Ufferfilge never leaves the house without a kippah. He goes about his daily life with the small piece of cloth on his head. But being visible as a Jew is not without consequences: Anti-Semitic hostility, insults and strange encounters of all kinds. An enlightening and shocking story about being Jewish in Germany today.
Levi Israel Ufferfilge, born in 1988 in Minden, North Westphalia, studied Jewish Studies and Yiddish Studies. After completing his doctorate, he is now head of the Jewish International School - Masorti Primary School in Berlin. He writes about his experiences as a visible Jew on Twitter under the hashtag #juedischinschland and on Facebook, where his anecdotes have a large readership.

Presentation of the second literature scholarship holder of the City of Chemnitz Stefan Hornbach Reading and moderated discussion

In his novel "Den Hund überleben" (Surviving the Dog), published in 2021, Stefan Hornbach writes about a young man's cancer and tells a powerful story about friendship and family, about being young and illness. He presents a captivating debut that tells of existential matters in a natural and moving way that is rarely seen.
Stefan Hornbach, born in 1986 in Speyer, studied theatre studies, psychology and modern German literature in Munich, acting at the Akademie für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg and literary writing at the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig. His debut novel was honoured with the literature prize of the Jürgen Ponto Foundation.
The event marks the start of the second literary scholarship from the city of Chemnitz. Stefan Hornbach has the residency scholarship from April to September 2024.

Conversation à la française: An encounter with the comic author Jérémie Dres

As part of the first "Journée française" in Chemnitz, the City of Chemnitz, the City Library and Institut français Sachsen invite you to a discussion with comic author Jérémie Dres to talk about his works and his creative output.
The discussion will be held in French and translated into German.
Jérémie Dres lives and works in Hamburg. His works mix autofiction and documentary comics. He has written several graphic novels, including "Nous n'irons pas voir Auschwitz" (Cambourakis, 2011), "Si je t'oublie Alexandrie" (Steinkis, 2016) and "Le jour où j'ai rencontré Ben Laden" (Delcourt, 2021). At the same time, he creates short comics reports for the press in magazines such as XXI, Neon, Phosphore and Muze.

Joanna Bator reads from her novel "Bitternis", a German-Polish family history from 1938 to the present day. Translation and reading of the German text: Lisa Palmes, moderation: Bernadette Malinowski, Professor of Modern German and Comparative Literature at Chemnitz University of Technology
Joanna Bator's new novel "Bitternis" (Suhrkamp, translated from Polish by Lisa Palmes, 2023) tells of female life plans. And how they fail. In an urgent, sarcastic tone reminiscent of Elfriede Jelinek, the drama of angry women who have passed on their secret through the generations unfolds. War, violence and private misfortune have created the fear and bitterness that only the youngest, Kalina, emerges from the spell of by telling her story. She powerfully demands the happiness that was denied to the women in her family.
Joanna Bator, born in 1968, has published in major Polish newspapers and magazines and spent several years researching in Japan. The German translation of her novel Sandberg by Esther Kinsky was a literary event. Since then, Joanna Bator has been recognised as one of the most important new voices in European literature. She was awarded the NIKE, Poland's most important literary prize, for Dark, Almost Night (2012). Joanna Bator is a university lecturer and lives in Japan and Poland.
In 2017, Joanna Bator received the International Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz.

Paths and roots - Cesty a kořeny
German-Czech joint reading with Radek Fridrich, Pavel Novotný, Anne Meinecke, Katja Ullmann and Sina Blackwood

The Czech authors Radek Fridrich and Pavel Novotný and the German authors from FDA Sachsen e. V. Anne Meinecke, Katja Ulllmann and Sina Blackwood will read texts that deal with the theme of home in the broadest sense.
The event will be accompanied by music from Carlos Ampié Loría.
Radek Fridrich is a poet, artist, editor, translator and educator living in Děčín. He has published numerous volumes of poetry and was awarded the Czech literary prize Magnesia-Litera for poetry in 2012. His texts have been translated into various languages.
Pavel Novotný from Liberec is a lecturer in German Studies at the TU Liberec and also works as a poet and translator. He received the Dresden Poetry Prize in 2022.
An event organised by the Free German Authors' Association, Saxony Regional Association, in cooperation with Chemnitz City Library.

Nataša Kramberger: Mauerpfeffer

Plea for sustainable agriculture in times of climate change. Moderation: Katja Manz, social and cultural geographer
Last summer, Slovenia was flooded by storms. Nataša Kramberger's organic farm was also flooded. The author took over her mother's farm eight years ago. She has already written a book about her prickly experiences as an inexperienced organic farmer, "Verfluchte Misteln" (Cursed Mistletoe).
Now she has added the poetic essay "Mauerpfeffer". In it, Nataša Kramberger tells of the joy when her small field yields barley for three years. But she also talks about climate change, which is making life difficult for farmers. Her text is also a plea in favour of sustainable agriculture, as this is essential for the global ecological balance. She writes her books at the time of year when her farm is at rest: "I don't hibernate. I do winter writing!"
Nataša Kramberger, born in 1983, is a writer, columnist and organic farmer. She writes essays, reports and commentaries for newspapers and magazines. She received the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) in 2010 for her debut novel "Nebesa v orbital" (2007). In summer, she lives in Jurovski Dol, Slovenia, and runs a small biodynamic farm with the eco-art collective Zelena Centrala. In winter, she lives in Berlin, where she runs the Slovenian-German cultural association Periskop.

Pick a poem - pick a story

On the occasion of the UNESCO World Book Day, members of the 1st Chemnitz Authors' Association provide self-written love poems, sayings and short stories for this event. Hanging on a washing line, the texts await their readers. Picking them off and taking them home is expressly permitted.

How does a 3D printer work? Where can I find usable models? What do I need to set up?
We will show you how to use the 3D printer and the PursaSlicer software every two months starting in February. The introduction takes about two hours and is free of charge.
Afterwards, you will receive a 'driving licence' and can use the technology independently.

Shelly Kupferberg: Isidor, A Jewish Life

Dr Isidor Geller has made it: he is a commercial councillor, advisor to the Austrian state, multimillionaire, opera lover and art collector and, after two failed marriages, the lover of a beautiful singer. He has travelled a long way from the poorest, most remote corner of Galicia, from the shtetl to the highest circles of Vienna. Isidor is convinced that no one can touch him. And certainly not those vulgar National Socialists.
Shelly Kupferberg, born in Tel Aviv in 1974, grew up in West Berlin and studied journalism, theatre and musicology. She is a journalist and presents various programmes on culture and society for Deutschlandfunk Kultur and RBB Kultur.

Arna Aley and Jonathan Golove: Fantasy and Partita in C.

The scenic fantasy "Das ewig Menschliche zieht uns hinab" (Following Fabian) by Arna Aley was commissioned by the Munich Volkstheater and celebrated its world premiere there in November 2023. The text builds bridges between Erich Kästner's novel "Fabian" and our present day. A century later, after the titular hero of Kästner's novel drowned in the Elbe in Dresden, he finds himself as F. in the train compartment of the Erzgebirge railway, together with other "reality deniers" and an AI assistant who cannot be dissuaded from her dubious political standpoint. The passengers are kept on their toes by Mrs M. (alias Irene Moll), a train attendant who acts like a tamer.
Partita no. 1 for solo cello (Songs & Poems) by Philipp Glass, a seven-movement work dedicated to cellist Wendy Sutter and premiered by her in New York in January 2007, is based on Glass' film score for "Taiji: Chaotic Harmony", a visual shamanic journey between heaven and earth, along New York's underground lines and streets and the sacred river. The music of Philip Glass is often referred to as the "soundtrack to our time".
Arna Aley, a Lithuanian-born author, musician, director and first literary scholarship holder of the city of Chemnitz and Jonathan Golove, an internationally performing American solo cellist, composer, professor at the University of Buffalo (USA) and artistic director of the "Robertntistic director of the "Robert and Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music" and the "June in Buffalo" festival got to know each other at KUNSTFEST WEIMAR 2019 and have been engaged in a lively artistic exchange ever since.

Fantastic stories from AQUILERIA

Aquileria is a fantastic, medieval world full of adventures and stories. It was written by the Chemnitz author Alexander Büttner. Various books, short stories and audio books have now been published. The stories are about people and their fates, their strengths and weaknesses, their decisions and their consequences. It is about an authentic view of light, shadow and what lies in between, about heroes and heroines who could never see themselves as such.
Alexander Büttner and Alexander Senf, another speaker from Chemnitz and the voice of the Aquileria audio books, will present some passages from the books and short stories as part of a staged reading with commentary. The evening will be rounded off with the opportunity to ask questions about the stories in an open discussion and exchange experiences on the topics of writing and publishing.
