CITY CYCLING for the fourth time in Chemnitz
Opening tour on 2 September from 5 pm
Chemnitz will be cycling again from 2 to 22 September 2024. This year, CITY CYCLING in Chemnitz will be launched with the #chemnitzdrehtamradtour2024. On 2 September, the people of Chemnitz can set an example for cycling together. The almost 16-kilometre tour will be accompanied by the police and is suitable for children aged 12 and over or children with cycling experience. The tour starts at 5 pm at the Georgius Agricola Grammar School in the Park of the Victims of Fascism. Wearing a helmet is recommended.
Since 2023, wheelchair users have also been able to take part in CITY CYCLING and track their kilometres. In order to focus more attention on the issue of inclusion in road traffic in Chemnitz, the CITY CYCLING programme draws attention to the concerns of people with special needs.
Wheelchair users, as well as anyone else who is unable to complete the #chemnitzdrehtamradtour2024, can use the easy entry point on the corner of Webergasse and Am Wall to join all other cyclists on the home straight.
In addition, CITY CYCLING participants and all other road users are invited to record barrier-free and low-barrier locations using the "Wheelmap" app. "With this Wheelmap, people with special needs and their relatives can navigate better through German cities, find accessible and usable offers and avoid sources of danger and bad experiences. This app can therefore contribute to more inclusive mobility in Chemnitz and strengthen our role as a good Capital of Culture host," says Petra Liebetrau, Disability Officer for the City of Chemnitz.
The visibility of participants with special needs is to be increased by the "CITY CYCLING FOR ALL" team, which all wheelchair or recumbent cyclists are welcome to join.
Background:
The Climate Alliance's international cycling campaign aims to cover as many kilometres as possible by bike during the 21-day campaign period. The campaign, organised by the Environmental Agency and the City of Chemnitz's Transport and Civil Engineering Department, draws attention to the concerns of cyclists, promotes individual health and contributes to climate protection. In 2023, 103 tonnes of CO2 were avoided during the campaign period compared to using a car.
