Twin towns cycle together: CITY CYCLING starts on 1 September
From 1 to 21 September, the city of Chemnitz is once again taking part in CITY CYCLING, the international cycling campaign of the Climate Alliance. In its year as European Capital of Culture, Chemnitz is cycling together with its twin city Düsseldorf, which has adapted its CITY CYCLING period to the Chemnitz period especially for this purpose.
The expansion of the city partnership to include the CITY CYCLING campaign is intended to further promote an exchange with the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and encourage Chemnitz and Düsseldorf residents to visit the cities and engage in dialogue.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "Chemnitz is spinning its wheels! - is the motto of our ever-growing CITY CYCLING campaign. In this special Capital of Culture year, the people of Chemnitz will once again be pedalling hard, this time in tandem with our friends from Düsseldorf, to set an example together for cycling, their own health prevention, climate protection and city twinning."
An exchange between the twin cities already took place in the run-up to the campaign. At the end of July, captain Emma and her husband Mark from the Düsseldorf team "Dynamo Wersten" visited Chemnitz: "One highlight was a guided cycle tour that introduced us to Chemnitz's sights and city history, the interventions and events of the Capital of Culture 2025 and Chemnitz's industrial culture. The motto of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 'C the Unseen' seems a fitting motto from a Düsseldorf perspective, as Chemnitz is still an unknown quantity for many people here. Wrongly so, as we have seen. Chemnitz is a diverse and exciting city, absolutely worth a visit!"
Rally and final tour In addition to joint activities with the twin city of Düsseldorf, Chemnitz residents can get active during the 2nd Chemnitz rally and the #chemnitzdrehtamradtour2025, an organised cycle tour:
On 6 September 2025, the 2nd Chemnitz rally will bring together twelve different tours, all of which will end at the Karl Marx Monument and then cycle together to Sports United/Sporty. The twelve decentralised tours start in Chemnitz and the Capital of Culture region in the spirit of the European Capital of Culture and joint cooperation between Chemnitz and the region. They are organised by active cyclists from Chemnitz and the region itself. They have different levels of difficulty and lengths: from 3 to 49 kilometres, everything is included. The tours are accompanied by the police from the route from the Karl Marx Monument to the stadium on Gellertstraße. Registration is required in advance at https://mitdenken.sachsen.de/1054790.
The joint #chemnitzdrehtamradtour2025 cycle tour, this year's final CITY CYCLING tour, will take place on 18 September. The meeting point is 5 pm at the Hartmannfabrik. The almost 18-kilometre-long, family-friendly tour will once again be accompanied by the police along the entire route. Among other things, it will pass the SFZ support centre to draw attention to the issue of inclusion in road traffic. Registration is not necessary.
CITY CYCLING stars 2025 As in previous years, the CITY CYCLING stars come from the citizens of Chemnitz. This year, Kerstin Fischer-Münzner, Cindy Schierle, Marcel Krippner and Kai Winkler will represent the cycling campaign.
Kerstin Fischer-Münzner is a passionate racing cyclist and cycles mainly on the Chemnitz Valley cycle path, the premium cycle path, or to Freiberg and back on a longer tour. The 41-year-old teacher associates cycling above all with freedom and great experiences in nature. She has supported the CITY CYCLING campaign with her team "Karl-Marx-Ballerinas" from the very beginning, as she believes that CITY CYCLING can help to encourage even more people in Chemnitz to cycle regularly.
For mum-of-two Cindy Schierle, the bicycle is an everyday companion - both for commuting to work and in her private life. Cycling keeps her fit and healthy and is good training for her triathlon preparation. Her hope is that the CITY CYCLING campaign will help to create more cycle paths and encourage even more people to switch to bikes: "A cycling capital of culture - for your own health and a healthier city."
For 44-year-old Marcel Krippner, bicycles have been an integral part of his life since he was a child at a children's festival. This year, Marcel is also taking part in the European Peace Ride. He says of CITY CYCLING: "It's a great project that brings cycling into the public eye, raises awareness and generates attention. I also find the many accompanying activities and events and, above all, the activation (and awarding of prizes) of schools very worthy of support."
The European Peace Ride is the new edition of the Peace Ride. It is organised by the European Peace Ride "chief commissioner", Kai Winkler. The 46-year-old has been cycling since he was a child and now prefers to ride his mountain bike or racing bike. Kai has been a CITY CYCLING enthusiast from the very beginning. He supports the campaign because cycling helps to protect the climate and because he appreciates the competitive nature of the event. He hopes that the CITY CYCLING campaign will be taken for granted by motorists and that this will lead to a better balance on the roads.
