CITY CYCLING enters its fourth round
Chemnitz once again part of the Climate Alliance's international cycling campaign
From 2 to 22 September, Chemnitz will be cycling again. The city will be taking part in the Climate Alliance's international CITY CYCLING campaign for the fourth time. Anyone who lives, works, learns, studies or is involved in a club in Chemnitz can now register and sign up at www.chemnitz.de/stadtradeln.
The campaign, organised by the city's environmental department in cooperation with the city's transport and civil engineering department, is aimed at everyone in Chemnitz, regardless of whether they cycle a lot or not. The aim is to cycle as many everyday journeys as possible during the 21-day campaign period.
"The ever-growing cycling campaign in Chemnitz is making a special contribution to the mobility transition and thus also to the energy transition. The CITY CYCLING app makes the CO2 savings compared to using a car immediately visible to participants," says Carina Kühnel, Head of the Environmental Agency. In addition, the anonymous app data forms a good basis for colleagues in transport planning.
STADTRADELN is thus committed to promoting individual health, cycling and environmental protection. A tour through Chemnitz is planned on 2 September 2024 to kick off CITY CYCLING this year.
The background
In 2019, Chemnitz City Council decided to take part in the Climate Alliance's international campaign. The campaign has been able to steadily increase the number of participants so far.
Last year, CITY CYCLING set new standards in Chemnitz: 3,222 people registered, 2,945 active cyclists contributed 638,591 kilometres. This corresponds to a CO2 saving of 103 tonnes compared to using a car. This means that all figures from previous years were exceeded. There was an increase of almost 89 per cent in the number of kilometres, and CO2 avoidance almost doubled.
Last year, the CITY CYCLING campaign ended with a final tour for the first time. Around 250 people from Chemnitz responded to the call to pedal together once again. The almost 14-kilometre cycle tour led past the Karl Marx Monument and through the Zeisigwald forest, among other places.
