At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council was briefed on how costs and timetables for the city’s infrastructure projects had developed in the first half of 2026. During the reporting period, the Department of Construction oversaw 138 construction projects, each with an investment volume of at least 400,000 euros.
As at 30 June 2026, more than €162.3 million was available for these projects. Of this, €99.16 million was contractually committed. €34.54 million had been invoiced or paid out for services rendered. The largest shares were accounted for by roads and transport (€50.4 million), broadband expansion (€41.3 million) and schools and sports halls (€34.9 million).
In the first half of 2026, work on the Johannes Kepler Grammar School, amongst other projects, was completed. Construction work has begun on other projects. These include the refurbishment of the after-school care centre building at the Kirchner Primary School in Wittgensdorf, the construction of the two-court sports hall in Grüna, and the second large artificial-turf playing field at the Sportforum.
Work is also continuing on the Pleißenbach green corridor between Stadtgut and the former goods station. A public space has been created there alongside the new watercourse. Around 95 per cent of the new stream bed had been completed by the end of June, after which the stream could be channelled into its new course. Due to higher costs for soil disposal, the budget had to be increased by around 1.15 million euros. The project was largely funded by grants totalling around 1 million euros. The City of Chemnitz’s own contribution amounted to approximately 115,000 euros.
The Küchwald–Wüstenbrand premium cycle route is currently being extended as part of construction phase 2.0 between Röhrsdorfer Straße in Grüna and Riedstraße, covering a distance of 2.425 kilometres. This includes work on four bridges.
Work on the Gebrüder-Grimm Primary School is also proceeding according to plan. There, the interior of the building is being refurbished and adapted to meet current requirements. Due to rising construction costs, the originally planned extension has been abandoned. Instead, a music room is being created in the former gym, amongst other things. The budget now stands at around 13 million euros.
The new extension to the Chemnitz Cooperation School on Brauhausstraße was officially opened on 15 September and has been in use since the start of the 2026/27 school year. The structural work on the extension was completed in March 2026, and the rest of the schedule had been adjusted.
At the Terra Nova Campus, plans for additional rooms to accommodate around 80 pupils are being considered. Ten to 15 further classrooms are planned.
Broadband expansion remains another key priority. More than 415 kilometres of civil engineering routes are planned for the second construction phase. The federal government and the Free State of Saxony together cover 90 per cent of the eligible costs, with the City of Chemnitz covering the remaining ten per cent. As some funding is only paid out once construction has progressed, the City of Chemnitz is initially advancing part of the costs.
Key risks associated with the construction works continue to include fluctuating construction costs, delays in the receipt of funding, and the city’s limited financial leeway. In addition, certain projects are subject to additional requirements that only become apparent during the construction work. The City of Chemnitz is therefore continuously monitoring cost and schedule developments and adjusting further planning as necessary.
Overall, the management report assesses the progress of the construction projects as stable. Deviations in costs and deadlines mainly affect individual projects and, as things stand, remain within manageable limits. Projects with a revised budget or increased risk remain under particular scrutiny.
