City council decides on constituency division for 2014 local elections
At its meeting yesterday, Chemnitz City Council decided to divide the city of Chemnitz into eight constituencies for the 2014 local elections. This means that the constituency division of the 2009 local elections remains in force.
With this decision, the city of Chemnitz will be divided into eight municipal constituencies in the current territorial status according to the regional and demographic structure. In addition to fulfilling the formal requirements, the division takes account of the fact that each constituency combines rural and urban districts and can therefore be expected to provide a representative cross-section of the entire electoral spectrum.
The constituencies are divided up on the basis of Chemnitz's neighbourhood structure.
As at 31 December 2012, the average population of all constituencies in the city was 30,175, based on a division into eight constituencies.
The legal basis for the city council resolution required to hold the 2014 local elections in Chemnitz is the Local Elections Act; the requirements to be fulfilled by the council prior to the resolution are the legally formal determination of the election date of 25 May 2014 by the Saxon government. The preconditions to be fulfilled before the decision by the committee are the legal determination of the election date of 25 May 2014 by the Saxon Ministry of the Interior, including publication in the Saxon Official Gazette, and the determination of the number of councillors to be elected at 60 in the valid version of the main statutes of the City of Chemnitz.
