City council decides on civil engineering measures

Today, the city council passed a resolution to initiate three civil engineering measures, with construction due to start next year.

Inselsteig bridge over the Zwönitz becomes a pedestrian bridge
The bridge will provide access to the Inselsteig, which branches off directly from the Am Zwönitzufer road. The current vehicle bridge is only passable to a limited extent with a maximum of nine tonnes. Due to its structural condition and the implementation of flood protection measures, a new replacement is required.

During the preliminary planning stage, various options for rebuilding the bridge were analysed. A new replacement pedestrian bridge will be built. In addition, a new bypass for traffic will be realised. This will achieve a compromise in terms of flood safety, accessibility to the areas to be developed and construction costs. The construction of a vehicle bridge at the same location cannot be authorised after consultation with the lower water authority.

The new construction of the pedestrian bridge will be realised at the current location. A steel truss construction was chosen for the new structure, which appears slender and permeable.

Construction is scheduled to take nine months. Construction is scheduled to begin in the 3rd quarter of 2017, depending on the completion of the new bypass to be built. The construction project will be realised with a full road closure; a temporary bridge to maintain pedestrian traffic is not feasible due to lack of space. The land acquisition has been mutually agreed with all parties involved. The costs of the new bridge construction amount to 504,000 euros.

Reconstruction of the Eubaer Bach invert, Hauptstraße 169
The subject of the measure is the need to repair damage to the invert structure, which is located directly under a private residents' bridge. The bridge structure was renewed by the neighbouring residents in 2016 and will be taken into account in further planning.

The damage to the riverbed slide is characterised by scouring in the transition area between the gradient surface and the riverbed, as well as the adjacent bank reinforcements. In some sections, the privately built bank reinforcements of the Eubaer Bach were undermined, which means that the stability of the reinforcements cannot be guaranteed. The damaged area is located in the village of Euba directly on the main road (K 6103). The main road is the connecting road between Chemnitz and Niederwiesa.

The river bed will first be cleared of debris, flotsam and alluvium. The riverbed is then stabilised with armourstones. The bed channel will be dismantled and adjusted to the course of the stream in a hydraulically favourable manner with a maximum gradient of 8%. Suitable material will be piled up for this purpose. A fish ladder will also be installed. In order to prevent future washouts, the embankment will be stabilised and the base will be secured with a row of stones. In order to improve the flow behaviour of the Eubaer Bach, the watercourse needs to be widened. The costs amount to 293,500 euros.

Renewal of Erdmannsdorfer Straße
The city of Chemnitz is planning to renew Erdmannsdorfer Straße in the coming year.

The road is part of the secondary network of the city of Chemnitz and is an access road to a residential area. The section to be renewed, with a total length of 443.7 metres, will be divided into two construction phases:

1st construction phase from Annaberger Straße to Comeniusstraße, construction length 130 m

2nd construction section from Comeniusstraße to the end of the road after the junction with Wolkensteiner Straße, construction length 313.7 m

The first construction phase has already been completed. The realisation of the second section is planned for 2017. This will involve eins energie in sachsen GmbH & Co KG laying a new drinking water pipeline in the section from Comeniusstrasse to Wolkensteiner Strasse. The waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz (ESC) will renovate the combined sewer. The entire project is being realised as a coordinated construction project by the City of Chemnitz's civil engineering department, eins and the ESC.

The carriageway shows clear signs of damage, and the edging and ancillary facilities are also heavily worn in sections. To minimise damage to the road surface, the pavement was covered with asphalt in places in the past. The fact that this is not a permanently durable repair solution for the carriageway surface is evident from the asphalt chipping at the edges of the patches, cracks and potholes within these repair areas. In addition, the pavement joints are heavily washed out so that the stones are partially loosened.

The renewal of Erdmannsdorfer Straße will rectify the poor condition, improve the quality of traffic flow in accordance with the relevant access function and eliminate the noise pollution caused to residents by the small pavement. At the same time, the drainage conditions will be upgraded.

During the planned construction work, the carriageway will essentially be fundamentally renewed in line with the existing road cross-section. The construction project will cost around 339,000 euros in total, of which around 99,000 euros are the city's own funds and around 240,000 euros are subsidies.
