Chemnitz railway arch: Preparatory work for the renewal of the Zschopauer Straße bridge begins
Start of construction 4 March 2019 - full closure with two-lane diversion route for nine weeks
On Monday, 4 March, sewer construction work will begin on Zschopauer Straße. The work is also being carried out in preparation for the replacement of the Zschopauer Straße bridge over the railway line. The construction work on behalf of Deutsche Bahn AG is expected to take nine weeks. Zschopauer Straße between Lutherstraße and Ritterstraße must be fully closed for this purpose.
Traffic will be diverted towards the countryside via Annenstraße, Reitbahnstraße, Bernsdorfer Straße, Lutherstraße and Gutenbergstraße and towards the city centre via Lutherstraße, Bernsdorfer Straße and Ritterstraße. Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.
Possible alternative routes are Augustusburger Straße, Annaberger Straße and Reichenhainer Straße/Fraunhoferstraße.
According to calculations, the diversion routes will be able to cope with the increased traffic, but obstructions cannot be ruled out at peak times.
The CVAG and RVE buses are also affected by the full closure. As things stand at present, buses will be travelling via the central bus stop, Reitbahnstraße, Bernsdorfer Straße and Lutherstraße.
Residential properties should remain accessible. Temporary restrictions will be agreed with the owners; discussions have already taken place.
Explanatory notes on the construction project
The construction of the new road bridge over the Dresden-Werdau and Chemnitz-Aue railway lines by the city of Chemnitz is part of the construction project of Deutsche Bahn AG, the so-called "Chemnitz railway arch". The bridge structure will be completely replaced from August 2019. Prior to this, sewer construction will take place on Zschopauer Straße. To clear the construction site, one of the supply lines will be relocated by the utility company. The existing combined sewer must be lowered. Starting and target pits up to 12 metres deep will be created for the underground pipe jacking. The pits are dimensioned in such a way that they can accommodate the necessary presses for the underground pipe jacking and that appropriate working areas remain. The construction work for construction phase 1 is only possible with a full road closure.
From around May 2019, the underground pipe-laying will then take place largely under half-sided closure.
Directly afterwards, the sewer construction will continue in the area from Ritterstraße to Clara-Zetkin-Straße using the open construction method. Towards the end of the overall project, another 14-day full closure will be necessary to install the new connecting pipes.
Deutsche Bahn AG's sewer construction project will continue until the end of October 2019, by which time the municipal project to build the new bridge on Zschopauer Straße will have already begun. The overall construction project for the "Chemnitzer Bahnbogen" will begin in autumn 2019 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2022.
Chemnitz railway arch
The last section of the railway infrastructure in Chemnitz that has not yet been renovated is being brought up to current standards. The approximately 2.8-kilometre-long section stretches between Augustusburger Straße and the Chemnitz Mitte stop. In 2019 and 2021, the track systems will be replaced and all railway bridges between the main station and the Kappel district, with the exception of the Chemnitz Viaduct, will also be renewed. A plan amendment procedure is being carried out for the Chemnitz viaduct. In addition, the Chemnitz Süd and Chemnitz Mitte stops will be made barrier-free and better connected to the local public transport network.
