Chemnitz model, stage 4: Preferred variant for the city centre adopted

The implementation of stage 4 of the Chemnitz model in the direction of Limbach-Oberfrohna is one step closer. At its meeting today, the city council approved the preferred variant, in which the track bed is in the centre position, of the first planning approval section - city centre. This will complete the tram network in the city centre with the central ring road (Theaterstraße/ Brückenstraße), Falkeplatz, the Brückenstraße/Straße der Nationen intersection, the continuation via Hartmannstraße and the Leipziger Straße intersection. The city centre is closed with the city centre ring road (Theaterstraße/ Brückenstraße), Falkeplatz, the Brückenstraße/Straße der Nationen intersection, the continuation via Hartmannstraße up to the Leipziger Straße/ Hartmannstraße intersection, including the connection to Zwickauer Straße/Stollberger Straße and Bahnhofstraße/Brückenstraße (Freie Presse bus stop area).

The overall planning of the planning approval section 1 (CM4 PFA1) is the responsibility of the ZVMS and is subject to a structured schedule. The ZVMS, CVAG and the City of Chemnitz have developed variants of the track position in the road space in planning documents. The result is the preferred variant for the route of the CM4 PFA1. On this basis, the technical solution and the design priorities are to be further developed in future planning.

In the planning area, the stops Falkeplatz, Getreidemarkt, Innere Klosterstraße, Stadthalle, Theaterstraße, Festplatz/Oberschule, Leipziger Straße are planned.

The construction and land acquisition costs excluding planning, fees and compensation and replacement measures are estimated at approx. 72.4 million euros.

Keyword Chemnitz model:

The Chemnitz model aims to provide efficient and transfer-free direct connections in rail-based public transport between the city centre of Chemnitz and the central locations in the region. The infrastructural prerequisite for this is the linking of the Chemnitz tram network with the regional railway network, so that scheduled rail services between the city and the surrounding area can make partial use of both the tram and railway lines. This creates transfer-free connections between the centre of Chemnitz and the surrounding area, i.e. interurban trams can reach the city centre and the central transfer point, the central station, which serves to provide direct access to Chemnitz's outlying districts and the surrounding area.
The Chemnitz model will significantly increase the attractiveness of local public transport.

The complete Chemnitz Model Stage 4 project includes the new construction of the Theaterstraße/Brückenstraße central tram ring and the new construction of the Hartmannstraße/Leipziger Straße tram line to the Chemnitz Centre. The connection with the railway line Wittgensdorf Oberer Bahnhof - Limbach-Oberfrohna will be made at a point yet to be precisely defined. To this end, the line determination in planning approval sections 3 and 4 is currently being processed in parallel.
