Chemnitz Christmas Market 2012
Mayor Barbara Ludwig opens the Chemnitz Christmas market with the traditional stollen cutting ceremony on 30 November at 4 pm on the market square by the town hall together with the tower keeper and Father Christmas - In future, open every evening until 9 pm - Almost 30-metre-high Christmas spruce will be delivered in the late afternoon of 17 November - Waiting time will be shortened with barbecue and mulled wine fun
Every year during the Advent season, the area around Chemnitz Town Hall is transformed into a Christmas world in the Ore Mountains. This year, the construction of over 200 huts will begin next week on the market square, Neumarkt, Rosenhof, Jakobikirchplatz, Richard-Möbius-Straße and Düsseldorfer Platz.
From 30 November to 23 December, visitors and guests will be offered original Erzgebirge folk art, typical tree decorations, Advent arrangements and many Christmas and culinary delights. Visitors can marvel at handicrafts in 19 huts. The medieval market with handicrafts, juggling and huckstering will also take you back to times long past.
On Friday, 30 November at 4 pm, the Chemnitz Christmas Market will be opened by Mayor Barbara Ludwig with the traditional stollen cutting ceremony. She will be supported by Father Christmas and Chemnitz Türmer Stefan Weber.
Incidentally, this year the doorman's call will be heard for the first time at 8.55 pm, as the opening time of the Christmas market has been extended to 9 pm every day in response to many requests from visitors. The Christmas market is open on 30 November from 4 pm to 9 pm and on all other days up to and including 23 December from 10 am to 9 pm.
Father Christmas is expectedevery evening at 5 pm and always brings a fairytale surprise. Girls and boys aged four to six can also meet Father Christmas on the Christmas market stage. Incidentally, there's a new man in the red coat: this year, Claus Höhne will be appearing as Father Christmas, having already supported the previous incumbent Hans Lange last year. After 21 years of service, Hans Lange is hanging up the rod. To thank him for his extraordinary commitment, the town will inscribe him in the Golden Book.
One of the attractions of the Christmas market this year is once again the aroma of mulled wine, which will be served in white and red cups in 2012. The tempting aroma of roasted almonds and nuts, gingerbread and other delicacies will once again waft over the market. The youngest guests will once again enjoy rides on the Bimmelbahn, the Ferris wheel and children's carousels.
The five-storey, twelve-metre-high Christmas pyramid on the area between Neumarkt and the market will once again be one of the special attractions of the Chemnitz Christmas market this year. On five floors, 24 figures depict everyday life in the Ore Mountains. The original Erzgebirge candle arch with a lace maker and carver is also once again one of the festively decorated entrances. The giant music box, whose turntable has a remarkable diameter of 4.40 metres, is also not missing at this year's Christmas market. Visitors to the Chemnitz Christmas market will also be greeted by a little rider, a smoking man and a giant nutcracker in the style of the Erzgebirge.
The main protagonist of the Christmas market, the almost 30 metre high spruce, will be erected on the market next Saturday afternoon (17 November). The tree was selected in the Sachsengrund forest district near Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz. Until the arrival of the stately, almost 100-year-old gem, the waiting time can be shortened with a pre-Christmas barbecue and mulled wine. A bench around the tree, which will be adorned with 850 lights, is new this year. Many visitors to the Christmas market are sure to use it to take a break. A total of 16,000 lights will give the Christmas market a festive glow.
One of the impressive highlights of the Christmas season is the 34th Great Mountain Parade on 1 December 2012, starting at 2 pm. 950 traditional costume bearers and mountain musicians will parade impressively through Chemnitz city centre and ring in the Christmas season in the Ore Mountains with their mountain parade. There will be a pre-concert in the Stadthallenpark from 1.30 pm. Miners and smelters from brotherhoods and clubs will give an insight into Ore Mountain customs.
