The Chemnitz author, Hans Brinkmann, is returning to Saxony after his one-month stint as city writer in Tampere, Finland. At the invitation of the German Cultural Centre Tampere and the Goethe-Institut Finland, he spent October 2019 in the Finnish twin city as a writer-in-residence.

In addition to a long-standing city partnership that has been in place since 1961, Chemnitz and Tampere are also linked by an ongoing bid for the title of European Capital of Culture. Chemnitz is applying for 2025 and Tampere for 2026, which is also the background to the selection of this year's City Scribe. Traditionally, every autumn a German-language writer spends a month in Tampere as a city writer and receives financial and non-material support from the City of Tampere's Department of Culture, the German Cultural Centre Tampere and the Goethe-Institut Finland.

Hans Brinkmann was selected by a jury. This was preceded by an invitation to tender issued by the City of Chemnitz's cultural organisation and cultural advisory board. Brinkmann has been known for more than 30 years, mainly as a poet and storyteller, but also as an art and cultural critic, and not only to the Chemnitz public. Numerous publications bear witness to this, such as the collection of poems "Schlummernde Hunde" (2006) and the novel "Die Butter vom Brot" (2011). Most recently, "Die Unheit.Gedichte" was published by Eichenspinner Verlag, Chemnitz/Bielefeld.

During his residency, Hans Brinkmann wrote several blog texts, which were also translated into Finnish and published on the website of the German Cultural Centre Tampere. Other elements of the residency programme included public appearances. He presented his own works at readings at the Helsinki Book Fair, a Hans Brinkmann Evening at the University of Tampere and on the Day of Finnish Literature at the Finnish Book Museum Pukstaavi in Sastamala, some of which were also read in Finnish and Japanese.

Hans Brinkmann will read live from his Tampere blog at the opening of the Christmas exhibition in the gallery of the Kunstverein Laterne e. V. on Monday, 9 December 2019, 7.30 pm, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 19.
