Background information:
According to the Joint Cancer Registry of the federal states (publication series 04/14), an average of 27,189 new cases of cancer were diagnosed annually in Saxony between 2010 and 2011. This included 15,123 men (mainly prostate, bowel and lung cancer) and 12,066 women (mainly breast, bowel and uterine cancer). In 2011, there were 67,000 men and 62,000 women living in Saxony who had been diagnosed with cancer in the last 10 years. 45% of all men and 36% of all women in Saxony will develop cancer in the course of their lives. According to initial estimates, around 29,000 people in Saxony were diagnosed with cancer in 2014.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) assumes that around 30% of all cancer deaths could be prevented by reducing certain risk factors (e.g. poor diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of exercise). Nutrition plays a very important role in cancer prevention. It has an undisputed influence on the development of malignant tumours. Factors that promote the development of cancer include a diet high in fat and salt, low in fibre and alcoholic beverages. However, certain ingredients in food (mycotoxins, nitrosamines, acrylamide) can also trigger cancer.
