Architecture Prize of the City of Chemnitz 2018
The City of Chemnitz will be awarding the City of Chemnitz Architecture Prize for the first time from 8 June 2018. Private and public building owners and architects/designers are eligible to take part. Buildings that have been realised in the city of Chemnitz in the last five years are eligible. The award ceremony will take place on 8 November 2018 in Chemnitz, after which all submitted works will be exhibited and published in a publication. The closing date for entries is 31 August 2018.
The non-endowed "Architecture Prize of the City of Chemnitz" will be awarded for the first time in 2018 and then every three years. The City of Chemnitz awards the prize for outstanding achievements in architecture, open space and urban planning that have a lasting impact on the cityscape. The decisive factor should not be the scope and size of a construction project, but rather the quality, innovation and complexity of the solution. This makes it possible to honour even small projects.
The aim of the award is to promote public discussion about high-quality construction, because building culture in the sense of a sophisticated architectural design of the cityscape is closely linked to the quality of life and location of the city. Architecture serves people, it is a mediator of form and function and essentially determines the atmosphere in the social interaction of a city.
The awarding of prizes and the public appreciation for clients and architects/designers is intended to set a benchmark for the solution of building and planning tasks, to communicate this and at the same time create an incentive for stabilising the level of building culture.
The winners will be selected by a high-calibre jury, which will include Prof. Hilde Léon (léonwohlhage architekten, Berlin), Amandus Samsøe Sattler (Allmann Sattler Wappner Architekten, Munich) and Prof. Dr Christian von Borczyskowski (Henry van de Velde Gesellschaft Sachsen).
The competition is being organised under the patronage of the Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig and the Mayor for Urban Development and Construction, Michael Stötzer. This emphasises the particular importance of high architectural quality and its necessary reflection in urban design.
