The intercultural Christmas festival at the TIETZ

Who is Father Frost? Does he perhaps know the snowflake or is he related to Father Christmas? And where does the witch Befana come from? How do people celebrate Christmas in Hungary, Ukraine, France and other countries? At the intercultural Christmas festival, such questions do not remain unanswered for long. At the TIETZ, the whole family can experience Christmas customs and traditions from all over the world. Christmas characters have travelled far and wide to make children's eyes light up with stories and presents around the Petrified Forest. There will also be Christmas treats and a large stage programme with music and dancing. The festival is organised by the City of Chemnitz's Migration Officer, the City of Chemnitz's cultural department, migrants, associations, traders and initiatives, including: FAIREwelt Chemnitz, IZ WELTLaden e. Father Christmas brings presents to the TIETZ and its guests

Father Christmas makes a stop at the TIETZ and reads Christmas stories for young and old on the stage in the foyer. He brings surprises for children, parents and grandparents in his sack.

Reading time with Sofia - the children's library mascot invites you

Picture books, stories and fairy tales are read aloud or told. Listening is fun, as is joining in the storytelling. But the best thing is to see the wonderful illustrations accompanying the stories, which is child's play with the Kamishibai theatre or the picture book cinema.

Reading: Lutz Seiler

Lutz Seiler was born in Gera/Thuringia in 1963 and now lives in Wilhelmshorst near Berlin and in Stockholm. After an apprenticeship as a building labourer, he worked as a carpenter and bricklayer. He completed a degree in German Studies in 1990 and has been head of the literature programme at the Peter Huchel House since 1997.
He has travelled to Central Asia and Eastern Europe and was writer in residence at the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles as well as a fellow at the Villa Massimo in Rome.
He has received several prizes for his work, including the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize, the Bremen Literature Prize, the Fontane Prize and the Uwe Johnson Prize.

"Nachts kommt die Angst", crime story reading with Gabriela and Michael Gwisdek

The house of horrors: In a small village in the Uckermark, painter Alexandra hopes to find peace and quiet again. But the house she has rented is considered haunted by the villagers. Alexandra thinks she hears footsteps in the attic - then she learns that her previous tenant has disappeared without a trace and that five women have recently been killed in the neighbourhood. She befriends Harris, the village policeman, who is obviously following her. Alexandra doesn't find out whether he has fallen in love with her or simply wants to protect her. When Theresia, the beautiful waitress from the village pub, is found dead, Alexandra feels she can hardly bear the atmosphere in her house. She receives warnings to pack her things. Is someone trying to drive her mad? But why? A gripping psychological thriller full of surprising twists and turns.

Voland & Quist literary salon with Dalibor Markovic

"And you write in German?" The author is often asked this question. Shortly after he has introduced himself and hinted at his profession. This is a question that needs to be answered. And the answers have to be defended. Dalibor Marković tracks them down in the innermost entanglements of his mother tongue, but also finds clues on other continents. In his search, the spoken word poet is supported by rhythms that he drums with his mouth. Sometimes even while he is speaking. They act as a personal sonar with which he manoeuvres through the world of his time.

read aloud for everyone with keen ears

When you are invited to the event "Auf leisen Sohlen..." in the city library, you have to be very quiet and prick up your ears, because the reading mentors come to visit and read out exciting stories. They take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. The literature-loving readers read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the Kinderwelt.

Lace-making in Advent

Lace-making is an ancient craft with a long tradition, but an old cultural technique that is in danger. The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is reviving the craft for Advent. At the TIETZ, adult education centre lecturer Andrea Ungethüm will be demonstrating lace-making techniques and inviting visitors to join in and try their hand at lace-making.

Christmas tree and co. - stars of evolution

How did a wobbly algae become a glamorous Christmas tree and how do the rings get into the trunk? To answer these questions, the Museum für Naturkunde will decorate itself together with guests through the history of the earth. Participants will create their own personal Christmas tree decoration with a fossil as a souvenir.

Intercultural artists' market

Chemnitz artists with and without a migration background invite you to "art shopping" at the TIETZ. Visitors can experience an (almost) infinite variety of colours and forms of arts and crafts. Numerous exhibitors will also be demonstrating their crafts live at their stands. You can buy and marvel at artistic paintings, colourful ceramics, amusing metal objects, valuable jewellery made from precious metals, textile works, works of art made from wood, felt and enamel, unusual handbags, knitted and sewn items, sound objects and wind chimes, unique hats and clothing made from fine materials. Anyone looking for that special Christmas present is sure to find what they are looking for here and can also make contacts with the local art scene.

In the dark season, we particularly feel the importance of light. This family afternoon will focus on the painterly realisation of light in its many manifestations. During a visit to the collection depot of the Neue Sächsische Galerie, we will look at paintings by Saxon artists. Afterwards, everyone can make the colours glow on a wooden panel themselves. Et in arcadia ego - Anyone who can say that about themselves has been lucky or done a lot of things right: I too have been to paradise. Akos Novaky places this famous quote from a painting by the French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin above his retrospective exhibition in the Neue Sächsische Galerie. In numerous paintings and drawings, it becomes clear how much the Leipzig artist with Hungarian roots has absorbed a wide variety of forms and ideas from art history and utilised them for himself. Admission to the vernissage is free.
