On Monday, 12 January 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the driving licence authority of the City of Chemnitz is offering special opening hours for the exchange of driving licences for EU driving licences.
Appointments can be made immediately by calling the authorities on 115 or by emailing fuehrerscheinumtausch(at)stadt-chemnitz.de. In addition to the request, the surname, first name, maiden name, date of birth, driving licence number and issuing authority should be stated. A confirmation with the exact appointment time and the respective appointment number will then be sent back by e-mail.
The offer is primarily aimed at Chemnitz residents who are in possession of a driving licence issued between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2001. The deadline for exchanging these permanent card driving licences for a temporary EU card driving licence is 19 January 2026.
Holders of paper driving licences already had to exchange their old driving licence for a temporary EU driving licence by 19 January 2025. Exceptions apply to driving licence holders born before 1 January 1953. They must exchange their driving licence by 19 January 2033.
Background:
Due to the transposition of EU law into national law, all driving licences issued before 19 January 2013 must be exchanged for an EU card driving licence by 19 January 2033. Due to the large number of driving licences to be exchanged, the exchange will be staggered.
Please note:
For driving licence categories that have an expiry date (e.g. category C), you can apply to extend your driving licence six months before the expiry date. The decisive factor for the start of the new term is then the end of the previous validity of a driving licence category and not the date of application. It is therefore advisable to book an appointment to renew your driving licence in good time.
