On Monday, 7 April, from 7 to 8.30 p.m., interested parties are invited to an event on the topic "Good Telegram - bad Telegram? A look behind the scenes of the messenger: lecture and discussion with Stefan Mey" at the adult education centre in the TIETZ, course room 4.07.
Technology journalist Stefan Mey will shed light on the background to the messenger service Telegram and invites you to join in the discussion.

Telegram is a free messenger service for use on smartphones, tablets or computers that was developed in Russia. It is a mixture of Facebook, WhatsApp and the darknet. It is considered a notorious shopping centre for drugs or a "hate machine". It is used by right-wing influencers, drug traffickers and terrorists, but human rights and climate activists also use the service.
Telegram is also an indispensable tool for civil rights activists and opposition activists in autocratic systems around the world - which is why anti-democratic governments often censor Telegram.
In his presentation, Stefan Mey sheds light on these aspects and takes a look behind the scenes: What is Telegram's history? What characterises its functions? How is the messenger service financed? How anonymous and independent is Telegram really? And how can Telegram be used sensibly despite all the problems?
Stefan Mey studied sociology and media studies and works as a freelance journalist and author.
The event is a cooperation between the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre as part of the "Kontrovers vor Ort" project.
