100 years of Chemnitz Adult Education Centre

Lecture on 13 November, 6 pm, in the city archive, Aue 16

As part of the series "The City Archive presents", the lecture "100 years of the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre" will take place on Wednesday, 13 November at 6 pm in the City Archive, Aue 16. The speaker will be historian Dr Jürgen Nitsche. Admission is free.

Dr Jürgen Nitsche is the author of the history of the traditional educational institution in Chemnitz, which was published this spring. The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre was founded 100 years ago in the school hall of the former Reform Realgymnasium (Schlossstraße 3). This makes it one of the oldest in the Free State of Saxony.

The adult education centre was already duly mentioned in the "Administrative Report of the Factory and Trading City of Chemnitz" for the years 1914 to 1921 in the section "Education and Cultural Cultivation". Dr Hans Keller, the long-serving head of teaching, was given ample space in an extensive appendix to describe the beginnings of the adult education centre.

On the one hand, the lecture is intended to honour the long struggle of the protagonists for an adult education centre in Chemnitz, and on the other hand, to remember its destruction by the National Socialists and its rebirth in the Soviet Occupation Zone/GDR.
