100 years ago - Revolution in Saxony and the formation of the first Free State
Lecture by the city archive on Wednesday, 16 January, 6 p.m.
As part of the series "The City Archive presents", a lecture on the topic "100 years ago - Revolution in Saxony and the formation of the first Free State" will take place on Wednesday, 16 January at 6 pm in the Chemnitz City Archive building, Aue 16. The speaker will be Prof Dr Mike Schmeitzner from the Hannah Arendt Institute at TU Dresden. Admission is free.
Prof Schmeitzner will explain the causes and course of the 1918/19 revolution in Saxony and Chemnitz, in the wake of which the Free State of Saxony was founded. His lecture will focus on the one hand on the movement to end the war and the backlog of reforms that led directly to the revolution. On the other hand, the various protagonists of the revolution and their programmes will be examined. The focus will be on the new institution of workers' and soldiers' councils, their tasks, possibilities and limits and, in connection with this, the question of parliamentarism and its complete implementation.
As the Chemnitz actors played a central role in this development for Saxony and at least partially followed special paths in the city itself, the focus will also be on this regional level. Chemnitz's contribution to the democratic revolution in Saxony was important.
