On Tuesday, the new footbridge and cycle path over the River Chemnitz, between Rößlerstraße and the Stadtpark, was opened to the public.

This re-establishes a direct link between the city park and Altchemnitz. Some remaining work will be carried out around the bridge over the coming days.

The steel structure, with a total length of 25.90 metres and a width of 4.14 metres, was hoisted into place back in June 2026. The carriageway width has been increased from 2 to 3.50 metres to ensure safe pedestrian and cycle traffic.

Construction work began in August last year with the demolition of the old bridge, after it had already had to be closed at the start of 2025 for reasons of structural stability.

The entire project – comprising the construction of a temporary ford during the works, the demolition of the old bridge structure, the restoration of the watercourse and embankment areas, and the construction of the new bridge – was carried out by Krause & Co. Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau GmbH on schedule within twelve months. The construction costs amount to 980,000 euros.
