Further development of the Pleißenbach intervention area

The President of the State Directorate of Saxony, Béla Bélafi, presented MIB AG from Leipzig with a funding decision of around 1.5 million euros for the "Former Chemnitz Altendorf freight station" project on 4 June 2026. The funds will be used to renovate the ground on a section of the former goods station in Chemnitz Altendorf. Once the redevelopment is complete, several owner-occupied and terraced house plots as well as smaller apartment blocks are to be built here at the Pleißenbach district park.</p
Before people can live on the site in the future, the soil must first be professionally cleared of contaminated sites. In any case, the project is another milestone in the development of the former railway site into a green belt in the centre of Chemnitz. I am delighted that the State Directorate of Saxony was able to support the project with funding right from the start.
The site on Gutsweg in Chemnitz was used as a goods station from 1903 until it was closed down in 2004. During this time, the area to be remediated served as a tank farm with underground tanks for storing fuel. The contaminated residues from this former tank farm are to be removed with the help of the funding. To this end, the old, still existing underground tanks and the surrounding contaminated soil covering a total of around 1,600 square metres will be excavated and professionally disposed of. The aim is to remove potential sources of contamination from the soil.</p
1 year Intervention area neighbourhood park at Pleißenbach
On 1 June 2025, one of the largest newly created green spaces in Chemnitz was officially opened to the public: the district park at Pleißenbach, created on the site of the former Altendorf freight depot - and the largest intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
In addition to an inclusive playground as the centrepiece of the park, this intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 offers a refurbished former loading promenade with wheelchair-friendly surfacing, two table tennis tables and various recreational and leisure areas. A new section of the Wüstenbrand-Küchwald premium cycle path has been integrated: between Rudolf-Krahl-Straße and Paul-Jäkel-Straße.
