Zschopauer Straße bridge over the DB railway tracks

Start of construction of the new replacement building on 5 August - short-term closures

On Monday, 5 August, work will begin on the construction of the new Zschopauer Straße bridge over the DB AG tracks. The construction of the new road bridge over the Dresden-Werdau and Chemnitz-Aue railway lines by the city of Chemnitz is part of Deutsche Bahn AG's "Chemnitzer Bahnbogen" construction project. This involves the renewal of the track systems and railway bridges (except for the Chemnitz viaduct on Annaberger Straße) in an approx. 2.8 km long section between Augustusburger Straße and the Mitte stop.

In this context, the urgently required renewal of the Zschopauer Straße road bridge is also being carried out by the city of Chemnitz. DB AG has been carrying out civil engineering work to lower the sewer since 4 March 2019.

The bridge structure is being completely replaced. This will mainly take place while maintaining two lanes of road traffic and pedestrian and cycle traffic on Zschopauer Straße. Short-term full road closures will be necessary during the demolition of the bridge and the installation of the new bridge sections.

The project will begin on 5 August with preparatory measures such as setting up the construction site, marking out and obtaining the necessary shaft certificates. The "sharp" start of construction will be on Monday 19 August in coordination with DB AG's planning. This will involve preparing the city-side part of the bridge to accommodate city and land-side traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians, in order to enable the demolition of the land-side part of the bridge.

The new bridge has a span width of 23.60 metres and a usable width of 20.50 metres.

In addition to the replacement of the bridge, road construction measures will be carried out on a section of around 550 metres along Zschopauer Straße, cycle lanes will be created, the traffic lights at the Zschopauer Straße/Ritterstraße junction will be renewed and four bus stops on Lutherstraße and Clara-Zetkin-Straße will be made barrier-free.

At the same time, inetz GmbH is dismantling a district heating line in the construction area and renewing the drinking water pipeline, the electricity systems and parts of the street lighting.

Construction is scheduled to end at the end of October 2021, taking into account the construction schedule for the DB AG railway arch.

The contract volume for the construction of the new bridge and the road construction measures amounts to 8.7 million euros. The entire construction project is largely subsidised by the Free State of Bavaria.

Ed. Züblin AG, South-East Division from Dresden, was commissioned with the realisation of the project.
