Zschopauer Straße bridge becomes more expensive
Increased construction costs are making the replacement of the Zschopauer Straße bridge over the railway line more expensive. The city council decided today to provide additional funds, with one hundred per cent funding from the Free State of Bavaria. Deutsche Bahn and the city had concluded a so-called crossing agreement for the replacement construction of the bridge, as this bridge is being renewed in connection with the "Chemnitz railway arch". The new bridge has a span of 23.60 metres and a usable width of 20.50 metres.
In June 2019, the tender for the replacement of the bridge structure to be commissioned by the city of Chemnitz was evaluated. The best offer was around 2 million euros above the cost calculation. This is in addition to higher ancillary costs. In February 2019, Deutsche Bahn put the first part of the construction project, the laying of the sewer, out to tender. The cost calculation was exceeded by around 1.2 million euros. As a result, it must currently be assumed that the costs of the overall crossing-related measure will be exceeded by around 3.5 million euros.
Cancellation of the agreement with the railway is out of the question, as the bridge construction is part of the renewal of the Chemnitz railway arch and involves extensive preliminary planning and long-term coordination regarding line closures. It was therefore decided to award the contract despite the additional costs and to start the construction work as planned.
