On Saturday, 21 June, from 9 a.m., the stadium on Gellertstraße will be transformed into a venue for fire brigade sports. On the occasion of the Capital of Culture year Chemnitz 2025, the Eubi Cup, which has been organised by the Euba volunteer fire brigade for more than 20 years, will be significantly expanded and, as the Chemnitz Fire Cup, will bring together more than 60 youth fire brigades to compete in the group relay discipline.
The event will be opened by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and is open to the public; admission is free. Representatives of the media are also invited.
The competitions will take place in the stadium until 4 pm. Following the award ceremony, which will be held by Mayor Knut Kunze, a decommissioned fire engine from the Rabenstein volunteer fire brigade will be donated to the partner fire brigade in Bélapátfalva (Hungary).
More than 60 teams will be competing, including teams from the Czech twin town of Ústí nad Labem, and the group relay is a demanding discipline in which the youth fire brigade teams not only demonstrate their skills in various firefighting tasks, but also their teamwork, speed and precise execution of tasks, which are essential for the later everyday operations of a fire brigade.
In addition to the exciting competitions, a varied programme awaits visitors on the stadium forecourt. Numerous attractions such as a festival of authorities, at which various blue-light organisations, city and state offices and charitable organisations are represented, as well as exciting demonstrations of firefighting technology, hands-on activities and information stands provide entertainment for the whole family. Visitors can find out about the work of the fire brigade and learn more about its important contribution to safety.
The Chemnitz Fire Cup is not only an important sporting event, but also a symbolic part of the Capital of Culture 2025, which is characterised by diversity and exchange. Youth fire brigade teams from Chemnitz's partner cities and the partner fire brigades of the Chemnitz volunteer fire brigades as well as youth teams from the European partner Capital of Culture Nova Gorica/Gorizia are also invited.
The event is not only intended to offer top sporting performances, but also to promote intercultural exchange. The Chemnitz Fire Cup offers the opportunity to strengthen cultural and interpersonal ties between the cities and to familiarise young people with the value of international cooperation.
The event is supported with 15,000 euros from the City of Chemnitz's "EUJA!" programme for civic engagement.
