Year in review at the zoo
Please note changed opening hours on 24 and 31 December
The year is not quite over yet, but we would like to take stock of 2012 at this point: By 30 November, 231 animals were born in the zoo and wildlife park (excluding small rodents, rabbits and guinea pigs) and 130 animals died. 170 individuals came from other facilities and 199 left the zoo and wildlife park.
A total of 53 mammal, 58 bird, 9 reptile and 59 amphibian species are currently kept at the zoo. The increase in the number of species in the vivarium is particularly pleasing, where the population has been increased again and many interesting species have been added. New additions include various species of tree climbers, as well as dwarf honeycomb toads and moss frogs. Some of the animals are currently still in quarantine.
Other notable additions include a pair of silver monkeys, a species that has never been kept at Chemnitz Zoo before, new males of the Przewalski's horse, jumping tamarin, Amur tiger and two-fingered sloth as well as a new breeding female of the Carpathian lynx.
The zoo published a new zoo guide and a zoo calendar for 2013, both of which are available at the ticket office. The traditional zoo and children's festival and the "Dreamnight at the zoo", an evening for disabled and chronically ill children, took place again, as well as the DRK blood donation day, which has now become an important event, and the "Premature Baby Meeting" organised by the Chemnitzer Frühstarter e.V. parents' association for the first time.
In August, the new giant salamander enclosure was opened to visitors, and in the fourth quarter, work began on converting the former lynx enclosure in the zoo into an enclosure for man owls.
