City of Chemnitz seeks lay assessors
Mayor Sven Schulze today announced the upcoming election of lay judges for the new term of office from 2019 to 2023. We are looking for applicants who live in Chemnitz or within the court district and will be at least 25 years old on 1 January 2019. German nationals who have a sufficient command of the German language are eligible.
Applications can be submitted by post, electronically or in person until 23 March 2018. The City Council and the Youth Welfare Committee propose twice as many candidates as the number of lay judges/ honorary judges required to the Aldermen Election Committee at the Local Court and Administrative Court. In the second half of 2018, the lay assessor selection committees will select the principal and assistant lay assessors from these nominations. Approximately 940 men and women are being sought for the office of lay judge in Chemnitz. Volunteers are deployed at the district court, regional court and administrative court in Chemnitz. No legal knowledge is required. However, lay assessors should have social skills, i.e. be able to judge a person's actions in their social environment. Lay judges and honorary judges do not receive any remuneration for their work. However, they do receive compensation for any disadvantages caused by their appointment in accordance with the Judicial Remuneration and Compensation Act (JVEG).
