Djeladas and ibexes share the enclosure amicably
The two enclosures of the djeladas and the West Caucasian ibexes at Chemnitz Zoo have been joined together. The reunion of the two species went smoothly, the animals met with curiosity, but also with respect. Of course, they still have to get used to living together.
The djeladas, which greatly enrich the animal population and delight many visitors, have been living at Chemnitz Zoo since May of last year. This exciting primate species was previously kept in the zoo's former snow goat enclosure. After this enclosure had been empty since November 2020, the "Tierparkfreunde Chemnitz e. V." association took on the project to convert it into a jelada enclosure. This was made possible by numerous donations from citizens and companies. The Western Caucasian ibex previously lived directly adjacent to the jelada enclosure.
With the socialisation of the two species, the zoo now shows a community that can also occur in a similar way in nature. Although Ethiopian ibexes share the habitat with the djeladas there, this species is not exhibited in any zoological facility. The djeladas and the Western Caucasian ibex are also not common in zoological institutions. Chemnitz Zoo is therefore able to present a "living community" that is unique in the world.
Even if similar communal enclosures are already known from other facilities, the socialisation of two or more animal species must always be approached with caution and well prepared. At Chemnitz Zoo, each species was able to get to know the new facility and familiarise themselves with the new situation. In addition, visual, auditory and olfactory contact with the other species was possible at all times.
In addition, communal enclosures are increasingly becoming part of modern zoo animal husbandry. They not only create new stimuli and challenges for the animal species living together and thus also serve to keep them occupied, but also provide new and varied observation opportunities for visitors.
Action day to mark the 60th anniversary on 11 August from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On Sunday, 11 August, from 10 am to 6 pm, all animal lovers are invited to an action day to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Chemnitz Zoo. The staff will be offering guided tours, behind-the-scenes insights, face-painting for children and making insect hotels. There are also many young animals to see All activities are organised exclusively by the zoo team. Food and drink will also be provided.
The zoo festival originally planned for 2 June had to be cancelled due to a storm warning. Now Chemnitz Zoo wants to make up for its 60th anniversary - albeit on a somewhat smaller scale.
