World Girls' Day at Chemnitz Town Hall

The International Day of the Girl Child is a day of action initiated by the United Nations (UN). Every year on 11 October, it is intended to provide an opportunity to draw attention to the disadvantages that girls still face worldwide.

On this day, attention is drawn to the difficult situation of girls in many countries around the world. Various campaigns will highlight ways to improve the situation of girls and young women. Demands include

  • Targeted support for girls and young women through education
  • Combating forced marriage
  • Equal rights in all areas of life
  • consistent implementation of anti-discrimination laws
  • No tolerance for violence against girls and young women in the name of tradition or culture

In Chemnitz, an action will take place on 9 October 2015 on the occasion of World Girls' Day from 1.30 to 6.30 pm at the town hall (meeting point is in front of the town hall). The topic is the participation of girls/women in political decision-making. Men are still heavily overrepresented in political committees, which is why girls and young women should be familiarised with local politics.

In the simulation game "Tatort Rathaus", the schoolgirls learn about the various structures of the municipality and the city council, they talk to female politicians and can try out for themselves how a political decision is made in Chemnitz. There will also be a photo exhibition and a joint buffet at the end of the event.

"Tatort Stadtrat" is organised by the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Mädchen und junge Frauen in Sachsen e.V., the Arbeitskreis Mädchen und junge Frauen Chemnitz and the Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Chemnitz.
