To mark World Environment Day on 5 June, the City of Chemnitz is drawing attention to the many ways in which the environment, nature and climate are being protected and strengthened in the city. Municipal measures, committed associations, initiatives and conscious behaviour in everyday life are working together to make the city greener, more climate-friendly and more liveable.
Urban greenery is an important building block. Green spaces, trees, parks and near-natural areas help the city to adapt to hot summers and heavy rainfall events. A visible example of this is the newly created neighbourhood park on the Pleißenbach. It combines water development, green space and quality of stay and makes it possible to experience urban nature in the centre of Chemnitz.
Sustainable mobility is also part of environmentally conscious urban development. By taking part in CITY CYCLING, Chemnitz is setting an example for climate-friendly mobility in everyday life. The campaign motivates citizens to cycle more often, avoid CO₂ emissions, improve air quality and reduce road traffic. (see press release 358)
In addition to municipal measures, associations, initiatives and educational institutions also make a significant contribution to raising environmental awareness in Chemnitz. They organise waste prevention projects, promote biodiversity, design educational programmes, maintain green spaces and encourage sustainable consumption. This commitment strengthens cohesion and shows that the environment and climate protection need many contributors.
The focus on waste prevention and resource conservation also ties in with this. With its Zero Waste programme, the City of Chemnitz provides information on ways to avoid waste in everyday life. The Chemnitz Cup, a reusable drinks programme, is a practical example of how resource conservation can be implemented in everyday life.
To mark World Environment Day, the City of Chemnitz is calling on people to further increase their environmental awareness in everyday life. Anyone who travels on foot, by bike or by bus and train, uses reusable items, saves water and energy, looks after green spaces or gets involved in clubs and initiatives is making a contribution to a green Chemnitz that is worth living in.
