World Alzheimer's Day: Living at home with dementia

Alzheimer's and senile dementia are becoming increasingly common diseases simply because of the ageing population. Nowadays, there is hardly anyone who does not come into direct or indirect contact with this topic.
"Living at home with dementia" is the theme of the day of action on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day, to which DEMENZ_NETZ_Chemnitz invites you on Saturday, 19 September 2015, from 9 am to 3 pm at Chemnitz University of Technology, Orangery (New Lecture Hall Building), Reihenhainer Straße 70.
A diagnosis of dementia brings with it major changes both for those affected and for everyday life in the family.
On the day of the event, modern technical possibilities will be presented that can support life at home for a long time and relieve the burden on relatives. Pioneering technologies such as ageing-in-place systems in the home, telemedicine and the OPDEMIVA laboratory flat - a research project by Chemnitz University of Technology - can be admired, tried out and scrutinised by the experts on site. Interesting presentations will provide information on special features of the behaviour of dementia patients and how to deal with them.
A reading by Sophie Rosentreter, in which she reports on her own experiences, will be particularly exciting for family carers. After a four-year modelling career, which initially took her through the world of luxury and fashion from the age of 16, the 39-year-old's life changed radically a good ten years ago. Her grandmother Ilse fell ill with dementia. Sophie Rosentreter and her family did not accept any help for seven years. "We thought we had to manage on our own. After all, it was our grandma." The relatives were suddenly confronted with depression and aggression. It was during this time that the mistakes were made that others can learn from today.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., competent contact persons from various outpatient services, advisors for technical and other aids, experts from outpatient and inpatient care services and, last but not least, the staff of the "Department for Senior Citizens' and Disability Assistance, Local Care Authority" of the Social Welfare Office will be available for a personal and, if necessary, confidential discussion.
In order to make it easier for relatives of people in need of care to attend the event, free care will be provided by a professional care service for the duration of the event.
The facility is barrier-free. Caring relatives and interested parties are cordially invited to attend. Registration is not required. Attendance is free of charge.
