World AIDS Day on 1 December
Worldwide day of action with many events in Chemnitz too; 25th anniversary of AIDS-Hilfe Chemnitz e.V. on 11 December
Medicine is reporting major advances in the effectiveness, tolerability and convenience of drug therapy. Nevertheless, a cure is still a long way off and the dangers should not be underestimated. The need to educate the population in order to prevent new infections remains indispensable.
While there were 49 new HIV diagnoses in Saxony in 2004, there were now 171 new diagnoses in 2014, putting Saxony in line with the national average of new diagnoses in relation to the population. The fight against stigmatisation and discrimination of those affected remains important.
In Chemnitz, HIV treatment centres, AIDS Hilfe, the public health department and the Chemnitz Cooperation Association for Sexual Education work closely together to help those affected and provide education in order to prevent new infections.
Once again this year, many events are planned around the topic of HIV/AIDS and STIs (sexually transmitted infections):
25 November, 5 p.m., Aidshilfe Chemnitz e.V.
STI workshop "The doctor as a guest at the round table" with Dr Karin Schreiter, specialist in dermatology and venereology at the advice centre for sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS, Chemnitz public health department
1 December from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., TU Chemnitz, refectory
Photo campaign "An STI rarely comes alone" - photos with students and information about sexually transmitted infections, information stand and AIDS teddy sale
2 December, 9.30 am and 11.30 am at Kraftwerk e.V.
"Liebe Love and the Sexperts" - sex education theatre play for people aged 12 and over with approx. 400 pupils from Chemnitz special schools, secondary schools and grammar schools
Discussion groups with young people are also held in various social facilities in the city of Chemnitz. The young people will have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss and engage with the topic of STIs and HIV/AIDS.
11 December 2015, from 5 p.m. in the Weltecho
Festive event to mark the 25th anniversary of AIDS-Hilfe Chemnitz e.V. with guest speakers, photo campaign and solidarity stollen.
Charity concert from 8 pm with Balkan beats by the band "Gruppa Karl-Marx-Stadt" and music by DJ Falko Rock. The proceeds will go to the Ukrainian AIDS project "Nadeschda" and the Chemnitz refugee aid organisation.
World Aids Day 2015 is intended to draw attention to the fact that people with HIV and Aids need solidarity. Even today, those affected still suffer from fear of contact, exclusion and stigmatisation. Only a few people with HIV dare to openly discuss their infection because they are afraid that others will turn away from them.
The city's public health department on 0371 488-5361 and the AIDS-Hilfe Chemnitz e.V. on 0371 41 52 23 can provide expert information on all questions relating to sexually transmitted infections. In addition, every citizen can receive anonymous advice and be tested for HIV at the counselling centre for sexually transmitted infections and AIDS at the public health department.
