Work begins at Wilhelm-Külz-Platz to upgrade the area
Pathways are being widened, trees and shrubs planted, benches and litter bins installed and car parking spaces rearranged vertically in future
The area around Wilhelm-Külz-Platz, close to the residential neighbourhoods on Brühl, is being upgraded with an extensive construction project starting at the beginning of November: The main focus of the work commissioned by the city's Parks Department is to ensure that pedestrians will be able to cross the square north of Müllerstrasse directly in future and, as a prerequisite, to widen the necessary path connections to an appropriate width.
The paths will be constructed with concrete paving in the east-west connection and with the existing natural stone paving in the north-south connection. Seven new deciduous trees will also be planted along this path axis: five blood plums, a silver maple and a horse chestnut. Of the old trees, only an old hawthorn with low vitality will have to be felled to ensure traffic safety. A small area of mixed perennials will be planted in the centre of the square at the crossroads. Seven new benches and seven litter bins will also be installed.
In addition, the road stump belonging to Josephinenstrasse will also be removed, taking the existing car traffic out of the centre of the square. The parking situation will also improve, especially for local residents: 23 new vertical parking spaces will be created on the western side of the square.
Construction preparations are currently underway on site. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the second week of November with the dismantling of the paths in the north-eastern area. The Chemnitz-based planning office sLandArt has been commissioned with the planning of the construction project and is also responsible for the construction supervision. The construction work was awarded to the company Fachcenter Garten + STL-Bau GmbH from Hauptmannsgrün, which is experienced in landscaping, following a successful tender.
The City of Chemnitz is investing a total of around 180,000 euros in the construction and planning services for the remodelling of Wilhelm-Külz-Platz. Two-thirds of the project is being subsidised by the federal government and the state of Saxony.
