On Wednesday, 14 December at 5 pm, the City of Chemnitz Equal Opportunities Officer, Pia Hamann, and the Chemnitz Women's Initiatives are inviting interested parties to a special Christmas party at the Lila Villa Women's Centre, Kaßbergstraße 22:
The former Equal Opportunities Officer of Annaberg-Buchholz, Christa Schwenke, and two other musicians will present an exciting lecture with musical accompaniment on the topic of "Women in Mining". Admission is free of charge.
Representatives of the press are also cordially invited.
800 years of mining have left many traces in the Ore Mountains. In 2019, the region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Of the 22 confirmed sites, 17 are on the German side and five on the Czech side.
For centuries, there were hardly any women associated with mining. A nameless ore washerwoman on the panels of the Annaberg mining altar from 1522/23 is the first evidence that there were also women in this environment. The next woman to make a name for herself was Barbara Uthmann, who, as a widow, took over the management of the family business, a Saigerhütte, in 1553. A link to modern times is the year 1947, when many women began working in mining at SDAG Wismut. Whether voluntary or forced - the lecture will also provide information about this.
