Wolgograder Allee / Arno-Schreiter-Straße junction to be converted into a roundabout
Construction work by the civil engineering department begins on Monday
On Monday, road construction work will begin at the Wolgograder Allee/Arno-Schreiter-Straße junction: this intersection with the same layout will be converted into a small roundabout with an outer diameter of 32 metres by the City of Chemnitz Civil Engineering Department. Wolgograder Allee will be redesigned for a total of approx. 150 metres before and after the roundabout; the roads leading to the future roundabout will be adapted as required over a length of approx. 20 metres each.
The future roundabout will have four arms: Two of these will be formed by Wolgograder Allee, a third arm will also be formed by the Wolgograder Allee stump (dead end) and the fourth by Arno-Schreiter-Straße. In the western branch of Wolgograder Allee (landward side), the bus stops, which will be located directly opposite each other in future, will be arranged as kerbside bus stops. These and the pedestrian crossings will be barrier-free.
The roundabout will be built in three construction phases, with traffic on Wolgograder Allee being maintained in two lanes in all phases.
The side links Arno-Schreiter-Straße and the stump of Wolgograder Allee will have to be closed off from the junction temporarily; during this time, these side roads to and from Wolgograder Allee will not be usable. During this time, diversions will be made via Markersdorfer Straße and Alfred-Neubert-Straße.
The redesign of the junction is part of the city of Chemnitz's medium-term plans to remodel Wolgograder Allee. The conversion to a roundabout is not only due to the associated easing of the traffic situation in favour of motorised road users, but will also benefit pedestrians in terms of even greater road safety thanks to the associated construction of pedestrian crossings.In addition, the construction of the roundabout will also meet the requirements of public transport, as the two stops will be located directly opposite each other in future and, together with the pedestrian crossings, will also ensure road safety for passengers getting on and off the bus.
The construction work should be completed by mid-November 2013. The company Gunter Hüttner & Co. GmbH from Chemnitz was commissioned to carry out the construction work following a public tender. The construction costs for the project amount to around €200,000. The construction project is being subsidised by the Free State of Saxony with € 143,000 for the improvement of municipal infrastructure.
