Winning design for indoor swimming pool in Bernsdorf finalised
The results of the competition will be on display at the Stadtbad from tomorrow
Mayor Michael Stötzer today presented the winning design of the competition for the future swimming complex in Bernsdorf: 1st prize goes to Code Unique Architekten GmbH and Storch.Landschaftsarchitektur from Dresden, whose design will thus be realised. It is the result of a realisation competition that was concluded today with the jury meeting of the jury headed by Prof. Brigitte Häntsch.
The winning entry impressed the jury with its balance between the powerful appearance of the building and the transition to the landscape, which integrates the existing outdoor pool area. According to the jury, the design offers outstanding functionality in the pool area: a pleasant entrance and lounge area with a view of the pool is created, the sports pools and the leisure pool can be operated separately and thus offer maximum flexibility. The design is atmospherically successful.
The 2nd prize was awarded to Marte Marte Architekten ZT GmbH and 3:0 Landschaftsarchitektur Gachowetz Luger Zimmermann OG from Vienna, the 3rd prize to AIC Ingenieurgesellschaft für Bauplanung Chemnitz GmbH, studio2 architekten and sLandArt Landschaftsarchitektur.
Commendations were awarded to Dähne Architekten PartGmbB and Freiraumplanung mit System, Lanschaftsarchitekten GbR (Dresden) as well as g.o.y.a. ZT GmbH, illiz architektur GmbH and EGKK Landschaftsarchitektur (Vienna).
Over the past two days, the jury, consisting of nationally active specialist judges, city councillors as expert judges, the mayor of the Department of Urban Development and Construction, heads of offices and departments of the City of Chemnitz and the Disability Officer as an expert, discussed and evaluated the ideas submitted.
Among other things, the design ideas and their urban planning concept, the quality of the architecture, functionality and utilisation quality, the concept for energy, sustainability and pool technology as well as the economic viability of the overall concept and the potential for the sustainable development of a combined pool were assessed. In addition, the design had to meet the requirements of the German Swimming Association for a competition-standard indoor swimming pool for swimming and water polo.

All competition entries can be viewed in an exhibition in the foyer of the municipal swimming pool during opening hours until 3 April.
Background to the Bernsdorf swimming complex:
In June 2016, the city council decided to build a new indoor swimming pool suitable for competitions with a 25-metre lane on the site of the Bernsdorf outdoor pool. To this end, a selection procedure was announced as an interdisciplinary realisation competition with a preliminary, open application process for planning offices or working groups with architects and landscape architects. Of the total of 17 selected participants, 15 submitted corresponding designs.
The new swimming complex at the site of the outdoor pool in Bernsdorf is intended to replace the functions of the Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool, which has since been closed, and strengthen the location of the outdoor pool. The construction is to receive 75 per cent funding from the Saxon Investment Strengthening Act (Sächsisches Investitionskraftstärkungsgesetz Budget "Sachsen") and is expected to begin next year.
The new indoor swimming pool will have a 25-metre swimming pool with six lanes as well as a teaching pool that can also be used by schools for swimming lessons. A small paddling area is planned for families with smaller children. A diving pool is also planned for the new indoor swimming pool in Bernsdorf.
