Winners of the city cycling campaign are honoured

Award ceremony on Friday, 5 November, 9.45 a.m. at the annual event of the AG Healthy Chemnitz from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Friday, 5 November at 9.45 am, the winners of the Chemnitz City Cycling Campaign will be honoured. Mayor Michael Stötzer will honour the participants during the 2nd annual event of the Healthy Chemnitz Working Group, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pentagon 3, Brückenstraße 17. Media representatives are invited. The 3G rule applies.

The Healthy Chemnitz Working Group, which has been active for four years under the leadership of the Chemnitz Health Department, has set itself the goal of bundling, further developing and implementing health promotion programmes and health-related activities. It consists of representatives from the municipality, authorities, health insurance companies, TU and other partners in the health and sports landscape. At the annual event of the working group, after the opening by Mayor Ralph Burghart, impulses from behavioural and behavioural prevention approaches are presented and the exchange between the participants is encouraged.

City cycling is a campaign of the Climate Alliance, in which the city of Chemnitz participated for the first time this year from 6 to 29 September - following a corresponding resolution by the city council in 2019. The main aim of the competition is to encourage as many people as possible to switch to cycling in their everyday lives and thus contribute to climate protection and the promotion of cycling. The city of Chemnitz has been an active member of the Climate Alliance since 1992.

In Chemnitz, 1678 cyclists and eleven members of the city council covered a total of
326,033 kilometres and thus avoided 48 tonnes of CO2 compared to car journeys. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, city cycling was a complete success for the city of Chemnitz. According to the latest figures from the city cycling portal, the city of Chemnitz is currently in 155th place nationwide and 3rd place in Saxony. In the category of 100,000 to 499,999 inhabitants, Chemnitz is in first place in Saxony and 115th place nationwide. 2095 municipalities and 799,960 cyclists took part in this campaign throughout Germany.

The Chemnitz winners of the City Cycling Awards will be honoured in the following categories: the most active cyclists (people with the most kilometres cycled), the team with the most kilometres cycled per person, the team with the most total kilometres cycled, the most active daycare centre and the most active school. One of the participants will also win a Diamant bicycle.

Background

Germany has ambitious goals for the next two decades. The country aims to be climate-neutral by 2045. Chemnitz is also in the process of reducing its CO2 footprint. 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 could be avoided if every car journey shorter than one kilometre was made on foot or by bike. However, the aim is not to do without mobility, but to switch to sustainable, low-emission and resource-saving forms of transport. Walking and cycling are at the heart of sustainable mobility. The expansion of the attractive urban cycle path network also helps to relieve the burden on car traffic. The construction of the first cycle lanes on Reichenhainer Straße between Lutherstraße and Campusplatz and on Schloßstraße is an important first step. More will follow.
