"Window into the history of the earth" opens on Geotope Day
On 20 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the excavation team at the "Window into the Earth's History" excavation site at Glockenstraße 16 will be showing new finds and inviting visitors to play a lithophone - an instrument whose sound box is made of stone - for the first time.
On Geotope Day, visitors will have the last opportunity before the winter break to see the progress of the Museum of Natural History's excavation on site. The excavation team and this year's trainees will be showing new fossil finds from the Chemnitz Petrified Forest and explaining their work. In the children's excavation site, youngsters can dig for fossils and experience what scientific work feels like. The finds are then examined under a microscope.
The Friends of the Museum für Naturkunde e.V. offer bratwurst and drinks. On "Geotope Day", institutions throughout Germany provide insights into the history of the earth. Since 2002, this event has been held on the third Sunday in September. The "Window into the Earth's History" is taking part for the third time.
