Whitsun walk through the Oberrabenstein game reserve
The facility, which is part of Chemnitz Zoo, has now been in existence for four decades There are three new additions to the zoo itself: two young West Caucasian ibexes and an armadillo from Dresden Zoo
Whitsunday marks the birthday of the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park, which has been part of Chemnitz Zoo since 1995: the spacious 35-hectare facility, located near the campsite, reservoir and Rabenstein Castle, has been in existence for four decades. Spacious and naturally designed, the wildlife enclosure currently offers 82 animals of 18 species a beautiful home that is committed to and fulfils the principles of species-appropriate husbandry.
To mark its birthday on 19 May 2013, the Wildgatter team has prepared various activities for visitors and invites you to visit on Whitsunday (19 May) in particular: 11 a.m. is the meeting point in the grounds for a show feeding of the black and mouflon deer and at 3 p.m. for the wolves and lynx. An information stand about the game enclosure will open at 10 am in the entrance area of the facility. Among other things, the zoo guide and the 2014 zoo calendar will be on sale here. Members of the zoo supporters' association will also be on site for the birthday and have once again brought their wheel of fortune with them. Various catering offers as well as horse-drawn carriage rides and pony rides for children in the area in front of the wildlife enclosure have been prepared.
The Oberrabenstein game reserve on Thomas-Müntzer-Höhe is only about ten minutes by car from the zoo grounds on Nevoigtstraße and is a very popular excursion destination for walkers, nature lovers and hikers at any time of year - especially as a visit to the game reserve can also be easily combined with hikes through the Rabenstein Forest. Incidentally, visitors to the wildlife park have the opportunity to view the very spacious and species-appropriate enclosures and observe the inhabitants not only from the paths, but also from observation platforms. Only European animal species are kept in the game enclosure: European fallow deer and red deer, wild boar (photo), mouflon (photo) and roe deer, wildcat and bison, wolf, pine marten and Carpathian lynx (photo), eagle owl (photo), buzzard, goldfinch, greenfinch and siskin, hunting pheasant, northern bullfinch and barn owl.

And on Whit Monday (20 May): Excursion to the animal park on Nevoigstraße - three new arrivals to welcome
After the birthday stroll through the Rabenstein wildlife enclosure on Whit Sunday, a walk through the zoo in the area on Nevoigtstraße is of course also a good idea on Whit Monday at the latest - to say "hello" to the new arrivals: two young animals that were born on 10 and 12 May at Chemnitz Zoo. Two young animals that were born at Chemnitz Zoo on 10 and 12 May and whose sex is still unknown can be welcomed at the West Caucasian ibexes, as well as a new tenant at the jumping tamarins: a male puffer armadillo has moved to Chemnitz from Dresden Zoo. Puffer armadillos mainly inhabit dry forests and scrubland in South America. They feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates and also eat fruit. The animals can curl up into a ball when in danger, with the forehead plate and solid tail closing the opening of the armour.
