Whitsun at the zoo - a worthwhile destination
New arrivals at the armadillos - Young animals at the capybaras - Naming of Bactrian camel foals - DRK blood donation day
Whitsun is just around the corner and Chemnitz Zoo is once again a worthwhile excursion destination for young and old.
There are some new residents to observe: We have managed to get a female spherical armadillo to join the male already at home in Chemnitz. It recently arrived in the city from Dortmund Zoo. She is three and a half years old and has been named Wenona. The zoo is now hoping that the two animals will get on well and produce offspring.
This has already worked for the capybaras: three young were born a few days ago and can currently be found in the tropical house together with their parents. Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world and can be found in various habitats in South America. They can swim and dive well, but also spend a large part of the day out of the water. In addition to milk, the young animals also eat plant food very early on, and the female bactrian camel cub born at the end of March will be given a name tomorrow, Saturday, at 3 pm. This name was chosen by the zookeepers from a large number of suggestions and will then be announced at the enclosure. Incidentally, the Bactrian camels kept in the zoos are pets.
On Whit Monday, 16 May 2016, a DRK blood donation day will take place at Chemnitz Zoo for the ninth time. Donations can be made from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the zoo school. Please bring your ID with you when donating blood. All donors on this day will receive a refund of the entrance fee for themselves and an accompanying child after donating blood at the zoo school, as well as a snack voucher. In addition, there will once again be an attractive supporting programme for children, this year under the motto "What connects 'blood brothers'".
