White-headed sakis move into Chemnitz Zoo
New primate species on display at the Tropical House
A new species has been living at Chemnitz Zoo since 1 April. The 14-year-old female white-headed saki Juma came to Chemnitz from the French zoo La Vallée des Singes together with her two sons Nahele and Saoko. The three survived the journey of just over 1300 kilometres very well.
The little family has now moved into the former spider monkey enclosure in the tropical house at Chemnitz Zoo. The enclosure was completely redesigned by the zoo itself after the Geoffrey spider monkeys were no longer kept there. With the new species, an attractive and interesting primate species is once again on display in the Tropical House.
The special thing about this species is that white-headed sakis are one of the few primates in which males and females look different. At birth, the young animals have the same grey-brown colour as their mother. This means they are well camouflaged on their backs. After about two months, the young males develop a white face mask and black hair on their bodies. The females remain grey-brown.
At the moment, the animals are still settling into their new home. However, the zookeepers are confident that they will quickly familiarise themselves with the newly designed enclosure. Visitors can now see the white-headed sakis in the Tropical House.
