"Where the sky rises" - film screening and discussion

On Thursday, 17 October, from 6.45 pm, the film "Where the sky rises" will be shown in course room 4.07, TIETZ. Admission is free. The film is in Spanish with German subtitles. After the film, visitors can talk to the filmmaker Tobias Kriele.

Esther Bejarano, born in 1924, survived Auschwitz as a Jewish girl because she was accepted into the girls' orchestra there. With her concerts and readings, she now warns against the dangers of fascism and war. She has been performing on stage with her son Joram and the Cologne hip hop group Microphone Mafia for ten years.

The film "Where the sky rises" by filmmaker Tobias Kriele reports on the concert tour of 92-year-old Esther Bejarano and the band Microphone Mafia through Cuba. The enthusiasm of the Cuban audience for Esther Bejarano and the band is impressively palpable in the film. The film also tells of today's Cuba and how members of the Jewish community in Havana live in Cuba today.

Following the film, there will be an opportunity to talk to the filmmaker Tobias Kriele. He studied, worked and lived in Cuba for eight years and can talk about the making of the film, his work with Esther Bejarano and Cuba in general.

This event is a co-operation between the VVN-BdA Chemnitz, the Cuba Sí regional group and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
