Where does the violence against the press come from?

On Wednesday, 15 March, from 7 to 8.30 pm, interested parties are invited to a lecture on the topic "Violence against the press - What's going on? Where is it going?" at the TIETZ, room 4.07.
Ine Dippmann, deputy studio manager at MDR in Leipzig and chairwoman of the German Journalists' Association of Saxony, will talk about freedom of the press and how it is currently under threat. She then invites you to a discussion.

Freedom of the press is one of the most important fundamental rights in a democracy; in Germany, it is enshrined in Article 5 of the Basic Law. However, the annual ranking by Reporters Without Borders shows that Germany fell three places in 2021 - mainly due to the increasing violence against journalists. This violence can be both physical and verbal in nature and is occurring more and more frequently, particularly on the fringes of demonstrations.
The event will examine the causes of this development and show specific examples of violence against media professionals. The role of the police in preventing violence against journalists will also be discussed. To what extent is the willingness to use violence against media professionals becoming a challenge for our democracy?
