Weather services warn of continuous rain and rising river levels

The German Weather Service has issued a report warning of heavy continuous rain from this evening, which is expected to last until at least Friday morning. Locally, rainfall of 40 to 70 litres per square metre is expected. In addition, the State Flood Centre of the Free State of Bavaria has issued a flood warning for the Mulde and its tributaries (for details, please refer to the reports from the aforementioned services). Although the rivers in Chemnitz are currently rising steadily, they are currently still below the flood warning levels.

The warnings are intended to enable timely precautionary measures to be taken along the river courses, for example to secure properties close to the river or to move objects from the cellar to higher areas of buildings.

Citizens, tradespeople, companies and institutions in flood-prone areas of the Chemnitz, Würschnitz and Zwönitz rivers as well as the second-order watercourses, Kappelbach and Pleißenbach can use the city of Chemnitz's SMS warning service to stay informed about possible flood risks.The City of Chemnitz's SMS warning service keeps citizens, businesses and institutions in flood-prone areas of the Chemnitz, Würschnitz and Zwönitz rivers and the second-order watercourses Kappelbach and Pleißenbach up to date on potential flood risks. Interested parties can register for this free and voluntary service provided by the City of Chemnitz simply by text message. If there is a risk of flooding, information or a warning is sent in the form of a text message.

Registration for this voluntary and free service offered by the City of Chemnitz is done simply by text message. Alternatively, it is also possible to register via the public authority telephone number 115. You can register by text message with the following text to the number 0177 - 1 78 78 78:

Only for the warning areas of one of the bodies of water:

  • "Start warning Chemnitz"
  • "Start warning Wuerschnitz"
  • "Start warning Zwoenitz"
  • "Start warning Kappelbach"
  • "Start warning Pleissenbach"

For the warning areas of selected bodies of water e.g. like this:

  • "Start warning Chemnitz Wuerschnitz"

For all bodies of water:

  • "Start warning all"

The SMS service can be cancelled for all warning areas with

  • "Stop warning"

The SMS warning service (receipt of warning messages) is free of charge. Costs may be incurred for the SMS to register or cancel the service, depending on the contract conditions of the customer's mobile phone provider.

The SMS warning service does not replace local instructions from authorities such as the city of Chemnitz, police or emergency services in a dangerous situation. These must be followed at all times. Residents are also called upon to inform themselves about the current weather situation via the media.

If required, small quantities of sandbags can be collected from the Baufeld company in Chemnitz/Klaffenbach (Chemnitzer Straße 3) from 17:00 today. The members of the Chemnitz/Klaffenbach volunteer fire brigade can be contacted on 0371/ 2 60 00 72 or via the fire brigade control centre on 0371/30 06 41. If necessary, further distribution points can be activated at short notice.

Due to the bad weather forecast for the weekend, various event organisers have decided to postpone the event: The children's festival originally planned on the Küchwaldwiese will take place on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm at Haus Kraftwerk (Kaßbergstraße 36). The organisers of "Fuego a la Isla" are moving the event to the AJZ (Chemnitztalstraße 54). For details, please refer to the information provided by the organisers.

The Chemnitz fire brigade asks for your understanding that due to the current weather conditions, the planned fire brigade sports event for the 15th Eibepokal and Eubicup on Saturday, 1 June at the Euba sports field will have to be cancelled without replacement.

If the weather remains unsuitable for outdoor pools, as is unfortunately to be expected according to the weather forecast, then bathers in Chemnitz are just as welcome in the city pool on Mühlenstraße. Should the rainy weather turn into real outdoor pool weather after all: The municipal outdoor pools in Einsiedel, Wittgensdorf, Bernsdorf would be open from Saturday, 1 June as planned, including the outdoor pool in Gablenz. (The only exception here in Gablenz is the children's paddling pool, which needs to be renovated more extensively than planned).
