In Chemnitz, the brown hare has become very rare and its distribution is difficult to assess. In order to make concrete statements for the future and to draw comparisons with older values, help from the population is requested: If a hare is sighted in the area of the city of Chemnitz, please do not hesitate to inform the Environment Agency of the location and time of the sighting. Pictures can also be sent.

About the brown hare:
The European hare has been voted the wild animal of 2015 by the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutsches Wild. The European brown hare (lat. Lepus europaeus) has been on the Red List of endangered species in Germany since 2009. The degree of endangerment is determined on the basis of population size and development.
This habitual animal, which is loyal to its habitat, seeks out its territory of approx.
20 to 30 hectares in open but overgrown landscapes. In this area, it spares several shallow hollows, the so-called "Sassen". The natural lifespan in the wild is four or more years, which the European brown hare does not reach across the board.
