Walk across the site of the Altendorf goods station
Excursion to the future district park at Pleißenbach: 6 October, 5 p.m.
On Thursday, 6 October at 5 pm, a public walk will start on the site of the Altendorf freight depot, during which the plans for the future district park will be presented. Anyone interested is cordially invited to attend. The meeting point is at the old goods shed, Gutsweg 47.
At various points along the route, planners, landscape architects and employees of the City of Chemnitz will provide an insight into the concept for the neighbourhood park.
An attractive green urban space is to be created on the site of the former goods railway station in Altendorf. The centrepiece is the Pleißenbach stream, which is to be redesigned with its banks in a natural way. The resulting neighbourhood park will be open to the public.
There is great public interest in the development of the area. Since 2014, exploratory walks, citizens' forums, dialogue events and two citizens' workshops have taken place, organised by the district management and local stakeholders.
The suggestions and ideas were analysed and taken into account by the City of Chemnitz in the further planning process. The site is also one of the intervention areas for the European Capital of Culture 2025. Intervention areas are areas where something is to be changed for the better. In the case of the derelict railway station site, a cultural landscape will be created that will benefit people and nature in equal measure.
The Altendorf goods station was put into operation in 1903. It was once a hive of activity, as the station was a hub for the surrounding factories in the north of Chemnitz. After around 100 years, silence followed. Nature slowly reclaimed the area. It is still a large wasteland.
