On Monday 3 August at 4.00 pm, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and the Head of the Fire Service, René Kraus, will present the Free State of Saxony’s Life-Saving Medal of Honour to five young people in the Green Salon of the Town Hall, Markt 1. On 12 March 2025, at around 4.30 pm, they took life-saving action during a fire at the ‘Pro Seniore’ care home on Salzstraße.

Vincent Beyer, Maja Feil, Magdalena Kaden, Clemens Michael and Jeremy Ulbricht were in Chemnitz for a training course as part of their Federal Voluntary Service with the Red Cross when, during a coffee break near the care home, they heard the alarm from a fire alarm system. They subsequently dialled the emergency number, initiated initial fire-fighting measures and helped to bring residents to safety. In doing so, they acted without the appropriate (protective) equipment and selflessly put themselves in danger.
The Free State of Saxony’s Life-Saving Medal of Honour for Rescue from Danger is awarded to individuals who, at the risk of their own lives or in particularly threatening and perilous circumstances, have saved human lives or averted a significant danger threatening the general public. The city of Chemnitz had nominated the young people for this honour.
