Volunteer election assistants wanted

The city's electoral authority is asking Chemnitz residents to participate as volunteer electoral assistants in the 2020 mayoral election, which will take place on 14 June 2020. If no candidate receives more than half of the valid votes, a second ballot will be held on 5 July 2020.

Who can be a poll worker and what does a poll worker have to do? For the proper conduct of the mayoral election on 14 June 2020 and for the possible second ballot on 5 July 2020, an electoral board will be formed for each of the 143 general polling districts and 30 postal ballot boards to ensure the smooth running of voting and the counting of votes in the respective polling station on election Sunday. All persons who have been registered with their main place of residence in Chemnitz for at least three months on election day, are German citizens or citizens of another member state of the European Union (EU citizens) and have reached the age of 18 can be election assistants.

Regarding activities on election day: The polling stations are open on election day from
8 am to 6 pm. The members of the electoral board meet in the polling station at 7.30 a.m. at the latest, unless another time has been set by the Chief Electoral Officer. They receive a short briefing on their tasks and the allocation of deployment and break times takes place, so that a deployment will generally not extend over the whole day. At around 5.30 p.m., the entire electoral board meets again in the polling station to prepare and carry out the ascertainment of results. Once the results have been determined, the operation is over.

Compensation for deployment: Compensation for work on an election committee is regulated in the "Statutes of the City of Chemnitz on the compensation of voluntary election assistants in elections and decisions" of 29 August 2017. Accordingly, a refreshment allowance is paid per election assignment for work on an election committee in accordance with the following overview.
