The electoral authority of the City of Chemnitz is calling on citizens to volunteer as electoral assistants for the 2014 European and local elections. The appeal is published on the City of Chemnitz website at www.chemnitz.de/wahlen and in the issue of the official gazette of the City of Chemnitz on 8 January 2014. Citizens can also obtain information by calling the public authority number 115.
Note: Citizens who are also willing to take over the management of an election committee as a chairperson or deputy chairperson should contact the electoral authority of the City of Chemnitz directly.
Who can be a poll worker and what does a poll worker have to do? On 25 May 2014, the members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany and, in Chemnitz, the city councillors and local councillors will be elected at the same time. To ensure that these elections are carried out properly, an electoral board will be formed for each of the 161 electoral districts in the city of Chemnitz to ensure that voting runs smoothly and that votes are counted at the respective polling station on election Sunday.
All persons who are German citizens living in Chemnitz or citizens of another member state of the European Union (EU citizens) aged 18 or over on election day and who have lived in Chemnitz for at least three months are eligible to be electoral assistants.
About the activities on election day: The polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election days.
The members of the electoral board meet at the polling station at 7.30 am. They receive a short briefing on their duties and are divided into working hours and break times, so that they will generally not be on duty all day. The electoral authority therefore endeavours to deploy poll workers close to their homes. At around 5.30 p.m., the entire electoral board meets back at the polling station to prepare for and carry out the ascertainment of results. Once the results have been determined, the operation is over.
For their voluntary work on the electoral board, the polling assistants receive a refreshment allowance - for work on a general electoral board in the amount of55 euros (supervisor), 45 euros (deputy), 40 euros (owner) and for their work on a postal voting committee in the amount of 50 euros (supervisor), 40 euros (deputy) and 25 euros (assessor).
Where and by when can citizens register as election assistants? Citizens who would like to support the conduct of the elections in an electoral board should send their declaration of willingness by 28 February 2014 by post to the address City of Chemnitz, Electoral Authority, 09106 Chemnitz or by fax to 0371 488-1896 or by email to wahlhelfer@stadt-chemnitz.de.
The declaration of willingness to vote can also be submitted in person at the following locations: at the information desk in the town hall (Markt 1), at the information desk in the Bürgerhaus am Wall (Düsseldorfer Platz 1), at the information desk in the Bürger- und Verwaltungszentrum Moritzhof (Bahnhofstraße 53) and at the information desk in the Technical Town Hall (Annaberger Straße 89) as well as at the citizen service centres of the City of Chemnitz and, of course, at the city's electoral authority (Getreidemarkt 3).
Please inform the electoral authority immediately of any changes to the data given in the declaration of readiness.
The letters of appointment to work as a poll worker will be sent out approximately three to four weeks before the election. However, anyone who has not yet received a letter of appointment during this time must allow for the fact that an appointment to work as a poll worker may still be operational until the Friday before the election.
Contact: If you have any questions about working as a polling officer or as the head or deputy head of an election committee, please contact the electoral authority of the City of Chemnitz directly - the contact person here is Gabriele Rantzuch on 0371 488-7473.
