Violence against the press - What's going on? Where is this leading?

On Tuesday, 17 January, from 7 to 8.30 pm, interested parties are invited to a lecture on the topic "Violence against the press - What's going on? Where is it going?" at the TIETZ, room 4.07. The speaker for the evening is Ine Dippmann, deputy studio manager at MDR in Leipzig and chairwoman of the German Journalists' Association of Saxony.

Freedom of the press is one of the most important fundamental rights in a democracy and is enshrined in Article 5 of Germany's Basic Law. However, the annual assessment of press freedom published by the organisation Reporters Without Borders shows that Germany fell three places in 2021. This is primarily due to increasing attacks on journalists. This violence can be both physical and verbal in nature and is occurring more and more frequently, particularly on the fringes of demonstrations.
The speaker will analyse the causes of this development and show specific examples of violence against representatives of the press. The role of the police in preventing violence against journalists will also be discussed. To what extent is the willingness to use violence against media professionals becoming a challenge for our democracy?
Ine Dippmann's presentation will be followed by an opportunity for discussion and dialogue.
