Video surveillance will be installed after completion of the central bus stop
The video surveillance planned for the city centre will be installed once the construction work currently taking place in the area of the central bus stop has been completed. The cameras are expected to go into operation in late summer 2018. The timeline results from the necessary Europe-wide tendering process, which has a significant impact on the timing of such a process. On the other hand, the realisation will be coordinated with the construction process at the central stop. The other associated construction phases in the Bahnhofstrasse area started in August and are expected to last until mid-2018. As part of the overall project, the necessary prerequisites, e.g. the laying of empty conduits and the installation of cable ducts, will be created for the installation of video surveillance. It is not considered sensible to install the surveillance technology before the end of the construction work, as this is not necessary during the measures, would only disrupt the construction process unnecessarily and cause considerable additional costs.
The following areas are to be covered by video surveillance:
- Straße der Nationen from the Brückenstraße junction to Galeria Kaufhof in the CVAG bus stops and carriageway area
- Park Am Roten Turm and forecourt at the entrance to the Stadthalle
- Central bus stop in the Rathausstraße area
- Central stop in the Bahnhofstraße area
- Tietz forecourt in the direction of Reitbahnstraße with CVAG platforms 11 and 12
- CVAG carriageway area on Bahnhofstraße between Bretgasse and Am Wall (central stop: end of platforms 3 and 4)
CVAG is responsible for the tendering and installation of video surveillance. A standardised system will be used in the entire city centre area. The server will be set up centrally at CVAG, whereby the areas of responsibility and access will be strictly separated between the city, C³ Chemnitzer Veranstaltungszentren and CVAG. The city is responsible for the Tietz forecourt and the city hall area. The police department will be given access to the live recordings if required. The data is to be stored for a certain period of time.
Before installation and commissioning, the city must submit the concept to the Saxon Data Protection Commissioner for approval.
The security measures taken to date in Chemnitz city centre will be continued regardless of the timeline. These include the mobile police station at Stadthallenpark, the increased deployment of the city security service in cooperation with the police and the private security service commissioned by CVAG and mobile youth work. Once installed, video surveillance will be a further component of these measures.
